Brevard falls 27-13 to LMU

Brevard, N.C. - The Tornados crossed the plate 13 times on 19 hits, led by Kramer Clark and Jackie Corn with three RBIs a piece, but Lincoln Memorial scored 27 runs on 24 hits, getting the weekend sweep of the Tornados, Sunday afternoon.

The Tornados fall to 1-10 on the year and 1-8 in the conference, while the Railsplitters improve to 12-8 overall and 6-3 in the conference.

Matthew Pruitt suffered the loss for the Tornados, giving up 11 runs, ten of which were earned, on ten hits while walking four and striking out one. Despite giving up seven runs on nine hits in four innings, starting pitcher, Austin Johnson earned the win for the Railsplitters.

Clark, who hit six for six through the first two games of the series, hit three for five, and in addition to his three RBI’s, had one run. Corn hit a two run shot in the bottom of the third for his first homerun of the year.

The Railsplitters struck first when they scored four runs in the top of the second. Shane Kaufman knocked in their first run on a double to left field, and then Chase Quarles homered to drive in three more runs.

Eight of Lincoln Memorial’s hits were doubles, and three of their hits were homeruns.

The Tornados made the score 4-2 in their half of the next inning. With two outs, Ron Patterson singled, followed by Josh Case single and a Matthew Ennis walk to load the bases. Johnson walked the next batter, Eric Renegar for the Tornados first run, and then Clark singled to right with the bases loaded scoring another. Corn’s homerun in the third accounted for two more Brevard runs making the score 6-4.

The Railsplitters had big back to back innings adding five runs and then seven runs in the fourth and fifth innings to make the score 18-4 when Brevard came to bat.

Moman led off the inning with a double to centerfield. Corn then walked, putting two runners on base for pinch hitter, Vance Crook who singled to bring Moman home. Cody Church then came on to pitch for the Railsplitters, retiring the first batter of the inning on a ground ball, but giving up a two-run single to Case, followed by singles from Matthew Ennis and Renegar, and another two-run single by Clark. Quarrels then came on to pitch, immediately giving up a two run single to Stephen Mullis, and after retiring Moman, gave up an RBI double to Corn to make the score 18-12.

Lincoln Memorial continued to add on runs with a three run sixth, and a six run ninth.

Couch, Nick Langley, and Quarrels each had four RBI for the Railsplitters, as all but two of the team’s batters knocked in at least one run. The two players who did not register an RBI, Juan Alvarez and Cody Pack, combined for five runs scored.

The Tornados return to action at Gil Coan Field on Tueday when Indian University of Pennsylvania travels to Brevard for a 2:00 p.m. game.
