BC Volleyball Opens Up Season With Two Wins at Montreat Tournament

Montreat, N.C. – The Brevard College women’s volleyball team opened up their 2008 regular season on Saturday, playing not one, not two, but three matches at Montreat College in the Montreat Tournament.

The Tornados scored two wins on the day, opening up the year with a 2-1 record in the young season.

The tournament which consisted of four teams – Brevard, Reinhardt, Shawnee State and Montreat – was played in a round robin type format with all four teams playing each other throughout the day.

In the Brevard’s first match on the day, the Tornados came out on fire, sweeping Reinhardt College in three straight sets, dominating from start to finish winning 25-20, 25-17 and 25-14.

Junior middle hitter and second-team ALL-SAC preseason selection Brooke Seaman led the way for the Tornados against Reinhardt, posting a team-high 12 kills and two blocks. 

Junior newcomer Chelsey Trojan recorded nine kills for the match, sophomore Kirsten Carlson posted an attack percentage of .500, picking up four kills along the way.

Freshman hitter Jordei Osby played well in her collegiate debut, recording two blocks in the three set match.

In the second match of the day for the Tornados, BC fell in three sets to Shawnee State 14-25, 18-25 and 23-25.

For the match, Seaman led the way offensively with 10 kills on only 19 attempts.  Newcomers Trojan and Osby had five kills apiece, as the Tornados struggled offensively.

Only a few hours later, the Tornados bounced back to defeat the tournament host Montreat College in three straight sets 25-17, 25-19 and 25-13, to finish the day with a 2-1 record.

Senior setter and captain Jami Perry recorded 37 assists for the match, with Seaman picking up 15 kills for the match, hitting over 58 percent for the contest.

Sophomore Carlson had four kills while Trojan posted eight kills for the three-set match.  Sophomore libero Rebecca Schoonover played well defensively, recording 15 digs for the contest.

The Tornados will remain on the road for their next contest, as BC will travel to Charlotte, North Carolina to face off with Queens University of Charlotte on Wednesday, September 3 at 6:30 p.m.
