Whitson and Roper named to NCCSIA All-State team

The Tornados duo named 2nd team All-State

Pembroke, N.C. - A record-setting season by the Brevard College men’s basketball team was capped by the selection of Jonathan Whitson and Josh Roper to the North Carolina Collegiate Sports Information Association All-State Second Team.

The duo was recognized for their contributions for Brevard’s turnaround from finishing ninth in the South Atlantic Conference in 2008-2009, to winning the 2010 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Men’s Basketball Tournament and becoming the first team from Brevard to reach the NCAA tournament.

Whitson became the first Tornado to be named a Division II Bulletin 2010 All-American Honorable mention, capping off a record-setting career which saw the senior rewrite the men’s basketball record book after either setting or retaining 12 single-game, single-season and career records.

The Clyde, N.C. native was also the first Tornado selected to the DII All-Star Game and the senior forward was also selected to the Daktronics NCAA II All-Southeast Region Second Team and was a NABC All-District First Team selection.

Whitson was also named a First Team All-South Atlantic Conference selection and was the 2010 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Tournament Most Valuable Player in leading the Tornados men’s basketball team to Brevard College’s first SAC title.

Throughout the year, Whitson achieved the personal milestone of reaching 2,000 points in his career and he currently is the BC career leader in points scored at 2,028, rebounds with 942, field goals made at 785, field goals attempted at 1,510, free throws made with 438, free throws attempted at 603 and will finish his career as the Brevard College all-time scoring average leader, averaging 17.95 points per game as a Tornado.

For the season, Whitson also set several records, including most free throws made and most consecutive free throws made in a row, while also setting the school record for most consecutive free throws made in a game and most field goals made in a game.

Roper was also named a second team selection after his first year in the South Atlantic Conference, after finishing among the leaders in the SAC in multiple categories, including: scoring, rebounding, field goal percentage, assists, free throw percentage, steals, three-pointers made and assist/turnover ratio.

Roper also had his own record-setting season with the Tornados this year either setting or tying 10 Brevard single game and single season records throughout the 2009-2010 campaign.

The Charlotte, N.C. native set the Brevard College single game scoring record in leading the Tornados to a triple overtime victory over Erskine College on January 18th, scoring 41 points in the win over the Flying Fleet. Roper also set the single game records for field goals attempted and three-pointers attempted on February 1st at home against Mars Hill, putting up 24 shots, with 14 coming behind the arc. Roper is also tied with Whitson for most field goals made in a season, converting 14 attempts against Erskine in his record setting performance.

Roper also set the single season record on the season in points (640), scoring average (20.6), field goals attempted (469), field goals made (230), free throw percentage (80.3%) and most assists (128).

Founded in 2002, The North Carolina Collegiate Sports Information Association (NCCSIA) is comprised of sports information professionals from NCAA Division I, II, III, NAIA and independent institutions from the state of North Carolina. The purpose of the organization is to promote collegiate athletics at all schools. Membership is open to anyone affiliated with a college, university or conference located in North Carolina, and whose area of responsibility lies within sports information.

NCSSIA selects all-state teams in the University (Division I) and College (Division II, III, NAIA) divisions for men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s soccer, softball and baseball.
