Tornados drop two in Tuesday twinbill with North Greenville
Mullis and Corn go deep in final home games of season
Brevard, N.C. - Jackie Corn and Stephen Mullis hit solo home runs but the Brevard College baseball team dropped both games of a Tuesday doubleheader against North Greenville University at Gil Coan Field. The Crusaders (34-8) won both games by an 8-3 margin in the last home games of the year for the Tornados (8-31).
BC was held scoreless for the first three innings of game one when they plated two in the bottom of the fourth. Corn led off the frame with a home run over the right center field fence. It was the senior catcher’s eighth round tripper of the year. Kellen Moman followed with a double to left field and came around to score on Derek Ham’s RBI single to center.
The Crusaders had their biggest inning of the game in the top of the fourth. They scored four runs on five hits, including an RBI single from Anthony Foulk, a two-RBI single from David Frazier and an RBI double from Adam Taylor. Frazier was three for three with two RBI and two runs scored.
Moman singled through the left side in the Brevard fifth to drive in Mullis. He went three for three in the game. Mullis and Ronald Patterson each had two hits for Brevard
Matthew Benjamin started and pitched four and two thirds innings for NGU to earn his first win of the season. He allowed three runs on seven hits while walking one and striking out one. Nate Richards worked two and a third shutout innings of relief.
Joseph Lepore started for Brevard and pitched three and a third innings, allowing six runs on eight hits while striking out one and walking two.
Mullis put the Tornados on the board in game two with a one out opposite field home run over the left center field fence, tying Corn for the team lead with his eighth home run this season.
The Crusaders answered with another four run inning in the top of the fifth. After Taylor was hit by a pitch Fulmer followed with a two-run home run. Brian Giles added an RBI single.
The Tornados scored twice in the seventh. Ham and Josh Case each had RBI singles.
Mark Benjamin went the distance for NGU and picked up his fifth win of the season. He allowed three runs on eight hits while striking out two,
Brennan Daniels took the loss for Brevard. He pitched four innings and allowed five runs on five hits while striking out two and walking five.
North Greenville travels to Truett-McConnell for a 3 p.m. game April 14. The Tornados go to Newberry for a 7 p.m. first pitch April 16 in game one of a three game South Atlantic Conference series.
