Tornados fall 11-4 at Newberry
Ham, Renegar drive in two runs each but Roman strikes out 15
Newberry, S.C. - Derek Ham went two for four with two RBI and the Tornados scored three runs in the ninth inning but the Brevard College baseball team fell to Newberry College 11-4 Friday night in game one of a three game South Atlantic Conference series at the Smith Road Complex.
Ronald Patterson broke up Newberry starter Chris Roman’s no-hit bid with a single in the top of the fifth. The Tornados (8-32, 2-20) scored their first run of the game when Ham singled to right field to plate Vance Crook in the seventh inning.
Patterson reached base after a dropped third strike with two out in the ninth inning to extend the game. After a Brett Brinson walk Ham hit a single through the right side to score Patterson. Eric Renegar added a two-run double to bring home Ham and Brinson.
Newberry 14-30 (2-20) scored at least once in each of the first three innings. Terrence Gray and Andy Vogel hit consecutive doubles in the top of the first and were brought home on a three run home run from Jovan Rohena. Jim Pollack hit a two-run homer in the third and Sanchez Gartman hit a two-run homer in the sixth.
Roman pitched a complete game, allowing four runs, one earned, on five hits while striking out fifteen and walking five to record his third win of the season. Shane Galloway pitched five and two thirds innings and took the loss for Brevard.
The teams will play a doubleheader Saturday, with first pitch of game one scheduled for 2 p.m.
