Weston and Sykes lead Tornados at Lees-McRae
Stallings also records a victory over the weekend
Banner Elk, N.C. - Nate Weston captured victories in both the cross country and the short track cross country events and Morgan Sykes also captured two victories as the Tornados cycling team competed in the Lees-McRae College Home Race.
The four events raced were split into two days as the Cross Country and Downhill events occurred on Saturday, while the Short Track Cross Country and the Dual Slalom were held on Sunday.
Tristan Cowie led off for the Tornados in the Cross Country event, finishing second overall with a time of 1:49:11, finishing behind Bradford Perley of Lees-McRae. Kody Adams, Lewis Gaffney, Scott Hoffner and Matt St. Marie also finished in the top 12 for Brevard in the Men’s A Group. Weston recorded his first victory of the weekend in the Men’s C Group, finishing with a time of 1:04:07.
Sykes was the lone BC rider in the Women’s B group, finishing with a time of 47:30 out-distancing the field for her first victory of the weekend as well.
James Chaput was the top rider for the Tornados in the Men’s A Group in the Downhill event, finishing 15th overall, with a time of 3:55. Asher Blackmore finished 19th overall, while St. Marie and Thomas Bagnal rounded out the group in the top 25. Kyle Stallings recorded his first victory of the 2010 mountain bike season in the Men’s C Group in this event, crossing the line with a time of 4:51.
Kate Weisenfluh was the top female Tornados rider in the Downhill event in the Women’s A Group, finishing second overall with a time of 5:47, finishing behind Hannah Trimble of Lees-McRae.
On Sunday, Cowie recorded his second podium finish of the event, finishing second overall in the Short Track to Perley in the Men’s A Group. Gaffney finished 12th overall, while Hoffner came across the line 16th overall. St. Marie and Adams rounded out the group in 30th and 31st. Weston came on top in his group for the second time on the weekend, winning the Men’s C Group, while Sykes recorded her second victory in the Women’s B Group.
In the Dual Slalom in the final event of the day, Bagnal led the Tornados, finishing fourth overall in the Men’s A Group, while Chaput placed 11th overall. Adams and St. Marie also raced in the event, finishing 15th and 22nd. Stallings rounded out the men by placing fourth overall in the C Group.
Weisenfluh finished third overall in the Women’s C Group to finish the event.
The Tornados are back in action on Sept. 25 as they head to Clemson.
