Morrison has 10 kills in Tornados loss to Catawba
Brevard falls to Indians, 3-0
Brevard, N.C. - Ashlie Morrison led the Tornados with 10 kills and added seven digs to the effort, but the Tornados fell in Boshamer Gymnasium on Friday evening to visiting Catawba College, 25-23, 25-17, 25-20.
Jamie Atkinson and Kortney Conner added seven kills for Brevard (2-9, 0-6 SAC) as the Tornados hit 14.7 percent from the floor for the match. Bethany Stevenson set up the BC attack with 30 set assists and had a service ace in the match.
Defensively, Conner led the way with 10 digs, while Lindsey Rogers and Rebecca Schoonover had eight digs apiece.
Seven Indians recorded kills for Catawba (5-5, 2-4 SAC) as the Indians recorded a 17.3 percent hitting percentage in the match. Jordan Raye led Catawba with 14 set assists, while Alli Parrish had six to help the Catawba attack. Defensively, Jenny Young led the way with a match high 12 digs, while Kaitlyn Whitmer completed a double-double with 11 kills and 11 digs.
Brevard and Catawba opened up the first set by splitting the first 20 points, before the Tornados went on a 4-1 run to go up 14-11as Jordei Osby recorded three kills and Stevenson added another. Brevard went up 19-14 on a block by Atkinson and Erin Rollins, before Catawba came back with a run on their own, going on a 7-0 run behind Anna Logan’s serve as Whitmer placed in two kills to fuel the run, putting Catawba up 21-19. The Indians closed out the first set on a kill by Parrish to go up 1-0.
Catawba opened up the second set with a 6-0 run on Raye’s serve and the lead advanced to 11-3 as Shay Meeks placed in a pair of kills. Brevard came bouncing back with a run of their own, cutting the lead to 13-9. The teams swapped points the remainder of the set, before Catawba clinched the 2-0 lead after a Brevard attack error.
The Indians held a 19-14 lead in the third set, before the Tornados responded, going on a late run on Joy Oswalt’s serve to cut the lead back to within two points as Oswalt, Rollins and Morrison each placed in kills, but following a Catawba timeout, the Indians finished the set on a service ace by Anna Logan to finish the match.
The Tornados continue their home stand in Boshamer Gymnasium on Tuesday, September 28th, hosting Wingate University. First serve in the match between the Tornados and the Bulldogs is set for 7 p.m.
