BC Volleyball Goes 1-1 on Saturday Afternoon in the BC Tournament

Brevard, N.C. – The Brevard College women’s volleyball team went 1-1 on Saturday afternoon, as the Tornados hosted the BC Volleyball tournament in the newly renovated Boshamer Gymnasium.

The Tornados won their first match over Virginia Intermont, but fell in their second match of the day to Columbia College to go 1-1 on the day and 5-2 for the year.

In the Tornados first match of the day, BC again came out of the gates slow only to come storming back to win in three straight sets 25-16, 25-18 and 25-14 over Virginia Intermont.

Brevard took the lead for good at 10-9 on a kill by Chelsey Trojan, which sparked a 15-7 run that was capped off with a Virginia Intermont service error to win set one.

In the second set, the Tornados went back and forth with the Lady Cobras in the early stages, before a kill by junior Brooke Seaman put BC on top at 12-11.

BC pushed the lead to as high as eight at 22-14, before the Tornados put the Lady Cobras away, winning the match 25-18.

In the third and final set, the Tornados never trailed jumping out to an early 10-3 lead by way of a kill from newcomer Chelsea Larsen. 

Brevard pushed the lead to 21-11 on another Larsen kill, before going on to defeat the Lady Cobras 25-14.

Seaman led the way for the Tornados, posting 11 kills and an attack percentage of .435 for the three sets.  Senior setter Jami Perry added nine kills to go along with her 22 set assists.  Outside hitters Larsen and Trojan had seven and six kills, respectively, while Trojan recorded five digs as well.

Libero Rebecca Schoonover had a team-high 11 digs while back-row specialist Cori Emory added seven digs.

For Virginia Intermont, outside hitter Jeanne Casagrande had a team-high nine kills, while Lacey Malone and Katie Bowles collected eight and six digs, respectively.

In the second match, the Tornados fell in three sets 25-22, 25-22 and 25-17.

BC struggled to hold on to the lead in set one, after taking an 18-15 lead and forcing a Columbia College timeout.  The Fighting Koalas fought back to regain the lead at 22-21 and then held off the home team to come away with the 25-22 win.

Set two was similar to game one in that the two teams traded the lead several times throughout the match, only to have Columbia hold off the Tornados at the end.

In set three, the Tornados could not get it going and trailed the entire game, falling down 20-12 at one point late in the set.  The BC comeback fell short as the Tornados were downed 25-17.

BC’s Seaman had 11 kills for the match and posted an attack percentage of .500, while Trojan had 10 kills and one service ace.

Perry had nine digs to go along with her 23 set assists.

In the other matches throughout the day, Columbia College defeated Virginia Intermont College 3-0 (25-22, 25-8, 25-10) in the first match of the day.  The Fighting Koalas then turned around and defeated Coker College 3-0 (25-17, 25-12, 25-22), completing the sweep of the Cobras at the BC Tournament.

In the first evening game, Coker College defeated Virginia Intermont in three straight sets 25-19, 25-11 and 25-20.

The Tornados will again be in action at home on Thursday, September 11, as BC will play host to Belmont Abbey.  The match is slated for a 7 p.m. start.
