Decosimo takes National Championship in Short Track at 2010 Collegiate MTB Nationals
Brevard has six podium finishes overall after Cross Country and Short Track events were completed
Truckee, Calif. - Alexis Decosimo took the Women’s Short Track National title and had a podium finish in the Cross Country event, while Tristan Cowie and Scott Hoffner both have two podium finishes apiece through the first two events at the 2010 Collegiate Mountain Bike National Championships.
The Championships started on Friday morning as the cyclists competed in the Cross Country Event. Decosimo led Brevard to their first podium finish of the Championships with her fourth place finish overall with a time of 2:14:57 as Lydia Tanner of Montana State University-Bozeman took home the title. Morgan Sykes finished 13th overall in the event, providing support for the BC team.
On the men’s side, Cowie brought in the men’s first podium finish, coming in second overall behind Howard Grotts of Colorado School of Mines. Cowie’s finish of 2:19:29 was 18 minutes faster than his finish in 2009, where he came in fifth overall. Hoffner, competing in his first National Championship event finished fifth overall with a time of 2:23:34 to take the final podium spot, making Brevard the only team with two male riders to finish on the podium on the first day of competition. Lewis Gaffney finished ninth overall in the event to give Brevard three riders in the top 10, while Kody Adams rounded out the group finishing 32nd overall.
The women’s took to the course first on Saturday morning as the cyclists suited up for the Short Track Cross Country event. Decosimo paced the field, taking home the first stars and stripes jersey for Brevard on the weekend with her victory in the event. It was the first time a Brevard College female rider has won the National Championship in the Short Track event, and Decosimo’s first individual national title in her career. Sykes finished 13th overall in the event, finishing ahead of Christen Boyer of Colorado School of Mines and Renee DeBruin of Ripon College to pace the Brevard team.
On the men’s side, Cowie and Hoffner again finished in the top five in the Short Track event, taking third and fifth respectively as Grotts captured his second individual National title of the weekend for Colorado School of Mines. Gaffney placed outside the top 10 in the event, crossing the line 11th overall, while Adams placed 27th. Matt St. Marie rounded out the group coming in 41st overall.
Saturday afternoon’s action continues with the Four Cross Event, while Sunday morning will feature the final event of the 2010 Collegiate Mountain Bike Championships, the Downhill event.
