Tornado Tipoff opens up the 2010-2011 BC Basketball seasons
Jones and Reid fall to 0-2 lifetime in the Zaxby's Chuck-A-Chicken contest
Brevard, N.C. - Coach Michael Jones and Coach Shannon Reid fell to 0-2 lifetime in the Zaxby’s Chuck-A-Chicken contest as the Tornados opened up the 2010-2011 men’s and women’s basketball seasons last night in Boshamer Gymnasium at the Tornado Tipoff.
The evening began in the auxiliary gymnasium as the basketball teams, the cheerleaders, members of the Tornado Club and the community of Brevard, as well as the students of Brevard College sat down to a meal provided by Poppies Gourmet Market and Café. BC Athletic Director Kim Pate opened up the proceedings, before turning the microphone over to Dr. Drew Van Horn, president of Brevard College, who provided the welcome to all who were in attendance. Ken Kolb, the president of the Tornado Club also was up on stage to provide his own welcome and encouraged all in attendance to join the Tornado Club in support of the student-athletes here at Brevard College.
Following the introduction, the women’s basketball team, led by Coach Reid, took the stage to preview the 2010-2011 basketball season about her team and the South Atlantic Conference.
Coach Reid commented about the difficulty of playing in the SAC, as the conference had five teams reach the NCAA Regional tournament last year, including the addition of Anderson University, but her team also had a statement of their own to make after being picked 10th in the SAC Preseason Coaches’ poll.
While Coach Reid was speaking, the players unzipped their jackets to reveal shirts with the number 10 covered by the universal sign for no to say they will not finish 10th in the conference this year, with the depth and abilities on the team in this upcoming season.
The stage was then turned over to the men’s basketball team as the BC Athletic Department recognized the accomplishments of the team last season with the presentation of the 2010 Food Lion SAC Championship and the NCAA Regional Tournament Appearance banners, which will be hung in Boshamer Gymnasium.
Coach Jones then talked briefly about the impact of the players in the SAC Conference Tournament championship run last year. He did go on to mention the impact players he is expecting to step up this season to continue the success in the program.
The cheerleaders also took the stage to talk about the upcoming season and their expectations and goals for the squad in the upcoming year.
Following the meal, the teams took to the court to warm-up before the lights went off and the tornado siren filled the air as the 2010 Tornado Tipoff started in full force in Boshamer Gymnasium.
Ray Gill brought the players out to the court one-by-one, introducing the players by their nicknames, before the women’s basketball team took the court for a 15 minute running clock scrimmage.
The remainder of the evening saw the BC Cheerleading squad lead the fans through a series of cheers, while faculty members and students participated in half court challenges, the Jets Jersey Dress Shot, and the K-Mart MyGopher Challenge, before giving way to the men’s scrimmage.
The evening culminated in the Zaxby’s Chuck-A-Chicken contest, with the teams being Coach Reid and Coach Jones against Dr. Van Horn and Head Baseball Coach Matt McCay, with the loser having to do the Chicken Dance in front of the entire crowd.
The Brevard College Athletic Department would like to extend an official thank you to the following businesses for their support and donations to the Tornado Tipoff: K-Mart, Co-ed Theater, Zaxby’s, Jets Pizza, and Poppies Gourmet Market and Cafe.
