BC falls in double OT in SAC TournamentNovember 3, 2010
Wingate was able to score in the final 30 seconds of the second overtime to defeat BC
Wingate, N.C. - The Brevard College men’s soccer team was able to comeback from a 2-0 first half deficit and tie things up 2-2 with Wingate University, but came up short as the Tornados fell 3-2 in a double-overtime loss in the 2010 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Men’s Soccer Tournament Quarterfinal on Wednesday night. Brevard took Wingate to the final 30 seconds of the second overtime.
Wingate came out of the gate shooting as they had 16 first half shots but were unable to find the net until the 15 minute mark. Jamie McKenna scored his 13th goal of the season when he took a cross from Fabricio Barancoski and put it away with his left foot. McKenna’s goal gave Wingate a 1-0 lead.
The Tornados were able to hold the Bulldogs at bay for almost 20 minutes until Wingate was able to find the net again. Paulo Brunetto scored his second goal of the season when he took a loose ball in the box and put a low liner into the net, giving the Bulldogs a 2-0 lead heading into the half.
The Tornados came out and took advantage in the second half by scoring two goals on just two shots.
In a two minute timeframe Brevard was able to find the net twice. First when Jami Uuttu (Naantali, Finland) took a corner kick from Jaime Villacis (Miami, Fla.) and used one touch to beat the Wingate keeper. It was Uuttu’s third goal of the season and Villacis’ seventh assist of the season to slim Wingate’s lead to 2-1 at the 69:51 mark.
Just two minutes later Landon Reid (Shelby, N.C.) was able to beat the Bulldog’s keeper for his second goal of the season at the 72:53 marker to nod things up at 2-2 which is where the score stayed through the remainder of regulation time.
The Tornados held Wingate to just three shots in the over time periods and didn’t allow the third and final Bulldog goal until just 30 seconds left in the second overtime. Barancoski used his noggin to knock one into the net on a free kick from Luke Mulholland for his eighth goal of the season. The goal gave Wingate the final 3-2 victory which eliminated Brevard from the 2010 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Men’s Soccer Tournament.
Jack Shaw (Simpsonville, S.C.) started the match for Brevard and was pulled after 45 minutes of play. Shaw allowed two goals on 16 shots by Wingate. Pauli Jussila (Valkeakoski, Finland) closed out the game for the Tornados. Jussila was tested by nine shots and held the Bulldogs at-bay until the final 30 seconds of the second overtime.
With the loss, Brevard fell to 3-15-1 as their final record for the 2010 season. Henri Erti (Kangasala, Finland), Niclas Stolt (Kaarina, Finland), Renato Barbosa (Vinhedo, Brazil), and Miro Mustonen (Helsinki, Finland) are four seniors that will be sorely missed in the BC Soccer program. The Tornados ended their season out winning two of their final four matches and look to build on their late season success for the 2011 season.
