Tornados fall to Falcons 65-56, drop to 0-3

Misenheimer, N.C. - The Brevard College women’s basketball team was upended in their third game of the season as they fell on the road 65-56 in Merner Gymnasium at Pfeiffer University on Tuesday evening. Candice Fritz led the Tornados recording the first double-double of her career as the Tornados fell to 0-3 on the season.

Brevard took an early 3-0 lead when Lindsay Brendle (High Point, N.C.) hit a three point basket in the first minute of play. Celeste Caudill return-fired with a trey of her own the next time down the floor to make it 3-3. The Tornados took another lead when Amanda Whitaker (Asheville, N.C.) hit a layup in Brevard’s next trip down the floor, making it 5-3 in favor of BC. The two-point lead was the final lead of the game for Brevard as the Falcons went on an 18-2 run making it 21-7 in favor of Pfeiffer after seven minutes of play.

Following the 18-2 run Brevard was able to keep pace with Pfeiffer as they traded baskets up and down the floor with the Falcons and went into half-time trailing 38-24.

The Tornados came out swinging in the second half and were able to fight back and bring their deficit within six points with just over five minutes remaining in the game. Following a foul by Candice Fritz (North East, MD) at the five minute mark, Christina Harvey hit a pair of free-throws giving the Falcons a 59-51 lead. Brevard was able to trade-off a pair of baskets with the Falcons, but Pfeiffer was able to come out on top 65-56 in the end.

Fritz led the Tornados with her double-double as she scored 13 points and was able to pull down 12 boards for BC. Fritz is leading the Tornados in scoring, she is averaging 11.7 points per game. Micheala Watkins (Forest City, N.C.) led the Tornados in points with 14 off of the bench. Watkins was 7-for-10 from the field. Brendle continued to shine on the offensive side scoring 13 points. Brendle is averaging 11.3 points per game this season. Pfeiffer’s Dominique China led all scorers with 22 points in the Falcons win over Brevard.

As a team Brevard shot 41.1% from the field in the loss. The Tornados struggled from deep shooting just 15.4% from behind the arc, hitting two of nine three-point shots. Both came in the first half. Whitaker led the Tornados defense with three blocks and a steal. Whitaker is averaging 1.33 blocks per game in three games this season.

Brevard continues their tough pre-conference road schedule on Saturday afternoon when they travel to Laurinburg, N.C. to take on Conference Carolinas opponent St. Andrews. Tip-off is set for 4 p.m. when as the Tornados and Knights square-off.
