Tornados top Bobcats 71-56 in Comfort Suites Classic

Salisbury, N.C. - The Brevard College women’s basketball team was able to pick up their third win of the season when they rolled the Lees-McRae Bobcats 71-56 on Saturday afternoon in the Comfort Suites Classic. The Tornados had three players in double-figures as led throughout the majority of the contest at Goodman Gymnasium on the campus of Catawba College. The Tornados improved their record to 3-4 overall with the win.

Brevard fell behind by as many as seven points in the first eight minutes of play as they tried to go stride for stride with the Bobcats, but Lees-McRae took a 14-7 lead with 11:51 remaining in the first half. The Tornados were able to rebound with a 13-point run giving them a six point, 20-14 lead over the Bobcats with just over five minutes remaining in the first half of play. Lees-McRae was able to tie things up with just over two minutes left in the half, but the Tornados were able to take the game into the half with a three point advantage.

Micheala Watkins (Forest City, N.C.) and Anna Schlobohm (Greensboro, N.C.) led Brevard in the first half of play with eight points each. Lindsay Brendle (High Point, N.C.) and Brianna Worley (Asheville, N.C.) were each able to contribute five in the first 20 minutes of play.

Brevard came out flying in the second half of play to jump out to a nine point lead with 16:49 remaining when Watkins hit a pair of free throws, giving the Tornados a 36-27 lead. Brevard continued to build on their lead and took a commanding 19 point lead following a pair of free throws by Candice Fritz (North East, MD) with just 9:40 left in the game. Brevard was able to gain a 21 point advantage with 6:37 left on the clock. Watkins was able to sink another pair of free ones to give BC a 60-39 advantage.

The Tornados were able to hold out a double-digit lead throughout the final minutes of play. Chezney McJunkin (Easley, S.C.) and Micah LaJoie each hit their first buckets of the 2010-11 season. Each of the guards hit a three-point bucket in the final six minutes of play contributing to the 71-56 final in favor of the Tornados. The three-ball was McJunkin’s first collegiate basket of her career.

Watkins led all-scorers in the game with 20 points, giving her 20 or more points in two consecutive games for Brevard. Brendle and Schlobohm each added 11 points of their own en route to the Tornados win. Holli Flippo (Kingston Springs, Tenn.) led the Tornados with eight rebounds, four offensive and defensive. Flippo was also able to pick the Bobcats’ pockets on three separate occasions.
