Tornados drop SAC opener at Anderson

Anderson, S.C. - The Brevard College women’s basketball team opened up their South Atlantic Conference schedule with a road game at Anderson University. The Tornados fell to the Trojans by a score of 63-52. With the loss the Tornados fall to 4-6 and 0-1 in South Atlantic Conference play.

The Trojans jumped out on-top after winning the opening tip, but the Tornados were able to fight and match Anderson and trailed 10-9 at the 15:32 mark in the opening half. After Amanda Parris hit a pair of free throws for the Trojans, Micheala Watkins came down to hit a three-point bucket to tie the game up at 12 a piece. Anderson return-fired with five straight when Ashley Abed made a layup and a three-point bucket by Lauren Beeson. Brevard came back with five of their own when Amber Roberts (Asheville, N.C.) hit a three-ball and Anna Schlobohm (Greensboro, N.C.) followed with a two-point jumper as the shot clock expired tying things up at 17-17 with just over 12 minutes remaining in the first half.

Alexa Neal was able to come back down the floor and hit her second three-ball of the game putting Anderson up 20-17 at the 11:48 mark. The Tornados continued to battle as Neal hit the first bucket after the break sparking offense from both sides. After Neal’s three-point bucket, the Tornados came back with a five spot after a Candice Fritz (North East, MD) two-point jumper and a Holli Flippo (Kingston Springs, Tenn.) three-ball. Heading into the final three minutes, Brevard trailed 31-29. The Trojans were able to go on a seven point run in the heading into the half as the Tornados trailed 38-29 at the break.

After the first half Brevard was shooting 11-of-32, good for 34.4% from the field and 5-for-13 from three-point line, at 38.5%. Micheala Watkins (Forest City, N.C.) is led the Tornados with six points in the first half. She also led Brevard with three rebounds in the opening 20 minutes of play. Neal led the Trojans in the first half going 4-for-4 from behind the arc with 12 points. Maci Siniard was 3-for-4 from the field with seven points in the opening half.

The Trojans opened up the scoring after three minutes into the second half when Tilde Ahlin hit a layup, which sparked the Tornados to respond with a Flippo three-pointer, making it 40-32. The Trojans went on a 12-4 run making it 52-36 with 8:45 remaining in regulation.

The Trojans were able to keep control through the remainder of the second half as the Tornados were only able to come within 10 of the Anderson until the final buzzer when the scoreboard read 63-52 in favor of the Trojans.

Holli Flippo led the Tornados offensively with 11 points in the loss. Amanda Whitaker (Asheville, N.C.) led Brevard on the boards with six rebounds as the Tornados were outrebounded by 19, 45-26. Lindsay Brendle (High Point, N.C.) and Micheala Watkins each had eight points. Brevard shot just 30.5% from the field while Anderson was 47.5% from the field.

The Tornados don’t have another game for 26 days when they travel to Greeneville, Tennessee to take on the preseason favorite to win the South Atlantic Conference, the Tusculum Pioneers. Tip-off is set for 5 p.m. in Greeneville.
