Tornados fall in SAC match-up 76-61 at TusculumDecember 30, 2010
The Pioneers dropped Brevard 76-61 on Thursday night
Greeneville, Tenn. - The Brevard College Tornados women’s basketball team fell in their second straight South Atlantic Conference game of the season as they dropped 76-61 to the Tusculum Pioneers on Thursday night. With the loss Brevard fell to 4-7 on the season and 0-2 in conference play.
In the first possession down the floor the Pioneers were able to draw an early foul on the Tornados’ Amanda Whitaker (Asheville, N.C.) and Jasmine Parker knocked down a pair of free-throws giving Tusculum the first lead of the game 2-0. Brevard was able to tie things up quickly as Micheala Watkins (Forest City, N.C.) went coast-to-coast hitting a runner making it 2-2 early in the half. Jasmine Gunn was able to give the Pioneers their second lead when she made an uncontested layup. The next time down the floor Staci Hicks hit a mid-range jumper giving Tusculum a 6-2 lead over the Tornados. Lindsay Brendle (High Point, N.C.) was able to bring the Tornados within two again when made a nice post move to beat the Tusculum defender. At the first media timeout of the half, Brevard trailed 8-4.
Anna Schlobohm (Greensboro, N.C.) was a spark off of the bench as she scored five straight for Brevard hitting a three-ball and a another jumper to make things 16-9 after the Pioneers took a 14-4 lead over the Tornados. Brevard continued to struggle as they were trailing 20-13 at the 11:59 mark.
The Tornados were able to bring it back within three after Holli Flippo (Kingston Springs, Tenn.) hit a three-ball. The Tornados trail 25-22 with 7:35 remaining in the first half. Kendal Baxter hit a three-pointer to put Tusculum back on-top by six with under five minutes remaining, 28-22.
Following the final media timeout of the first half the Pioneers were to rally and pick up an 11-point lead with just 2:14 left in the half. The Tornados went into halftime trailing by 12 as the Pioneers were on-top 43-31.
At the half, Linda Aughburns led all-scorers with 11, while Brendle and Flippo led the Tornados with eight points a piece. Whitaker was able to pull down six rebounds in the first half, while Flippo had four. Flippo also shot a perfect 2-for-2 from the field with two three-point baskets in the first half. She was also able to hit a pair of free-throws.
The Pioneers started the second half with a 6-0 that was broken up when Anna Schlobohm hit the first basket of the half for Brevard with just under 17 minutes remaining in the game. Following a three-point play by Jasmine Parker, Jasmine Gunn hit a layup, giving the Pioneers a 54-33 lead with just under 16 minutes left in the game. The Tornados were able to bring back within 15 when they hit a pair of threes and Alyssa Cutshaw (Thomasville, N.C.) hit two free-throws. Anna Schlobohm hit a 10-foot jumper to put BC within 13, at 56-43 wit just over 11 minutes left in regulation.
Jasmine Parker put Brevard’s 10-0 run to an end when she hit a 12-foot jumper making it 58-43 in favor of the Pioneers. Brevard and Tusculum continued to trade baskets and trailed 66-53 with 6:45 remaining.
The Tornados fought back to within 10 at the 4:54 mark. After trading buckets with the Tornados, fell behind 74-61 with 1:18 remaining. Jasmine Gunn hit a pair of free throws for the final points of the game as Brevard fell 76-61.
Lindsay Brendle and Anna Schlobohm led the Tornados with 15 points a piece in the loss to the Pioneers. Tusculum had four players in double-figures including Aughburns who led all-scorers with 17. Jasmine Parker had 16 for the Pioneers. Brevard was out-rebounded 40-25 in the loss. Schlobohm was a perfect 6-for-6 from the field, going 2-for-2 from three-point land.
The Tornados are back in action on Monday, January 3rd when they travel to Bristol, Tennessee to take on the King College Tornado. Game time is set for 5:30 p.m. and you can follow all of the action on 1240-AM WSQL or WSQLRadio.com.
