Several Tornados were bestowed with the honor
Brevard, N.C. - The 2010 Brevard College men’s soccer team was honored when five individual athletes were recognized by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) as an honorable mention College Men Scholar All-South Region selection.
All four 2010 seniors, Henri Erti, Miro Mustonen, Renato Barbosa, and Niclas Stolt, as well as, junior Scott Schuurman, were recognized for not only their athletic accomplishments but their academic success as well. Only 30 young men across the region have been acknowledged for their success on and off of the field, and five of these men were Brevard College Tornados.
Erti, a Kangasala, Finland native, started in all but one game this season. Erti scored one goal in seven shots on the season from as a defenseman. Henri finished his career at Brevard with three goals scored and three assists. In the classroom, he holds a 3.30 GPA as a Business and Organizational Leadership major. Erti was also a captain of the Brevard Tornados for the 2010 season.
Mustonen, a Helsinki, Finland native, as well started in 18 matches this season for the Tornados. He took two shots as a defenseman this season. Miro scored three goals back in his freshman season, being the same amount he finished his Tornado career with. Academically, Mustonen carries a 3.83 GPA and is majoring in Business and Organizational Leadership at Brevard.
Barbosa is a native of Vinhedo, Brazil who appeared in 16 matches this season, starting in 11 of them. The forward scored one goal on 13 shots this season. In two years with the Tornados, Barbosa has scored three goals and assisted one. He is a Business and Organizational Leadership major who carries a 3.36 GPA in the classroom.
Stolt is a native of Kaarina, Finland who started in 18 matches this season for Brevard. Stolt scored one goal and assisted another this season. In four years at Brevard, he has three goals and three assists as a midfielder. Stolt carries a 3.3 GPA as a Mathematics major at Brevard College. He was one of three captains of the Tornados for the 2010 season.
Schuurman is a native of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada started in all 19 games for Brevard this season. The junior defenseman scored one goal and assisted two this season for the Tornados. All of Schuurman’s points in his career came in the 2010 season. The Exercise Science major carries a 3.3 GPA in the classroom. He was also the only non-senior to captain the Tornados this season.
The Tornados finished this 2010 season 3-15-1, and were knocked out of the 2010 South Atlantic Conference Food Lion Men’s Soccer Tournament by the number one seed in the tournament, Wingate University on November 3rd. It was the Tornados first ever appearance in the postseason as a member of the South Atlantic Conference.
