Brevard had seven student athletes receive the recognition
Brevard, N.C. - The 2010 Brevard College women’s soccer team was honored when seven individual athletes were recognized by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) as an honorable mention College Women Scholar All-South Region selection.
Both 2010 seniors, Katie Donohue and Nikki Peacock, as well as, juniors Bailey Varley, Chelsea Freeman, Caitlin Hubbard, Rachel Laughlin, and Alyssa Caracena were recognized for not only their athletic accomplishments but their academic success as well.
Donohue, a Fredericksburg, Virginia native, appeared in 14 matches, starting in five for Brevard this season. Donohue played in 70 matches in her career, starting in 49 of them. In four seasons with the Tornados, Katie scored one goal. In the classroom, she holds a 3.59 GPA as a Psychology major. Following graduation, Donohue plans to attend graduate school.
Peacock, an Uxbridge, Ontario, Canada native, appeared in 14 matches, starting 13 of them this season for the Tornados. Peacock has appeared in 64 games for Brevard, starting in 57 of them. She scored two goals in the 2010 campaign. Peacock finished her four-year career with the Tornados, scoring five goals and assisting three. Academically, she carries a 3.47 GPA and is majoring in Exercise Science at Brevard. Peacock was a captain for the 2010 Tornados, who plans to attend graduate school following her graduation from Brevard.
Varley is a native of Concord, North Carolina who appeared in 17 matches this season, starting in 14 of them. The forward scored four goals and assisted two in her junior season. In three years with the Tornados, Varley has scored 17 goals and assisted eight. Her 17 goals is the most scored by any Tornado in a career. She is a Psychology major who carries a 3.30 GPA in the classroom. She was one of two juniors to be honored as a captain for the 2010 season.
Freeman is a native of Charlotte, North Carolina who appeared in 16 matches this season for Brevard, starting in 10. Freeman has appeared in 53 games at Brevard, starting in 46 of them. She assisted one goal in 2010. In three years at Brevard, she has three assists as a midfielder. Freeman carries a 3.71 GPA as an English major at Brevard College. She was one of three captains of the Tornados for the 2010 season.
Hubbard is a native of Clayton, North Carolina who started in seven games this season, but appeared in 17. The junior midfielder assisted one goal and scored another this season for the Tornados. In three years with Brevard, she has scored two goal and assisted two as well. She is an Exercise Science major who has a 3.94 GPA.
Laughlin is a native of Chesapeake, Virginia that appeared 16 games for Brevard this season, starting 13 of them. The junior defender assisted one goal this season for the Tornados. In three years with Brevard, she has scored one goal and assisted another. The Psychology major carries a 3.50 GPA in the classroom.
Caracena is originally from Raleigh, North Carolina. She appeared 16 games for Brevard this season, starting six of them. During her three seasons with Brevard, she has scored four goals and assisted four as well. Academically, Caracena holds a 3.41 GPA as an Exercise Science major at Brevard College.
The Tornados finished this 2010 season 3-13-1. The Tornados were able to pick up their first ever South Atlantic Conference win this season when they defeated the Tusculum Pioneers on September 28, 2010.
