The Tornados were outlasted by the Bulldogs at Cuddy Arena
Wingate, N.C. - The Brevard College women’s basketball team was downed on the road Saturday when they traveled to Wingate University to take on the Bulldogs. The Tornados shot just 35.1% in the game while the Bulldogs hit 41.7% of their shots. Brevard fell 79-59 and are now 5-13 on the season and 1-7 in South Atlantic Conference play.
The Tornados struggled to get their offense going in the first half as they shot just 18.5% from the field. The Bulldogs were 13-of-27 from the floor scoring 42 points in the first half. Brevard trailed 42-16 at the half.
Anna Schlobohm (Greensboro, N.C.) scored nine points in the opening 20 minutes, while Amber Roberts (Asheville, N.C) had three. Tish Logan led the offense for Wingate scoring nine points in the first half, while Kurie Washington and Simone Rutledge each contributed seven points in the opening half.
The Tornados came out firing in the second half and outscored the Bulldogs cutting their deficit to 22 as they trailed 55-33 with 12:44 left in the game. Heading into the second media timeout the Tornados cut the Bulldogs’ lead to just 19 following three points off of a free-throw and a layup by Micheala Watkins (Forest City, N.C.). The Tornados and Bulldogs continued to trade buckets back and forth, but the Bulldogs took advantage of two turnovers to give them a 66-42 lead with 7:53 left in the game.
Brevard and Wingate continued to trade buckets and as time continued to wind down they were trailing by 20, 71-51, with just under five minutes left in regulation. Brevard was unable to surmount the comeback as the game finished at 79-59.
The Tornados had three players in double-figures as Anna Schlobohm led the offense with 18 points in the loss, while Lindsay Brendle (High Point, N.C.) added 14 points and Amber Roberts (Asheville, N.C.) contributed 11 points off the bench. Brendle also led Brevard in rebounds with five boards.
The Torandos are back in action on Wednesday, January 26 when they play host to the Newberry Wolves in a South Atlantic Conference game. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m. at Boshamer Gymnasium.
