Tornados fall on Senior Day to Wingate, 87-77

Roper scores 31 in final game in Boshamer Gymnasium

Brevard, N.C. - Josh Roper tied a school record with seven three-pointers and Josh Jordan recorded his sixth double-double of the night as the Brevard College men’s basketball team celebrated Senior Night. However, Jaime Vaughn led five Wingate players in double figures with 24 points as the Bulldogs spoiled the party, 87-77.

Roper set BC (13-13, 8-10 SAC) records in field goals attempted and three-pointers attempted in going 10-of-29 from the floor and seven-of-17 from behind the arc in scoring a game-high 31 points in his last game on the Boshamer Gymnasium floor. Josh Jordan added 10 points and 11 rebounds, with two blocked shots, while Gaither Hendrix and Vincent Dombrowski were also in double figures with 12 and 11 points respectively. The Tornados shot 34.7 percent (26-of-75) from the floor in falling to Wingate for the second time this season.

Vaughn paced the Bulldogs (17-9, 12-6 SAC) with his 24 points and completed the double-double with 10 rebounds as Wingate jumped out to a 15 point halftime lead and withstood a furious Brevard comeback to take the win. Odell Turner added 14 points, while Chase Smith, Paidrick Matilus and Robert Carpenter contributed 13, 12 and 11 respectively. Ethan Kincaid set up the Wingate offense, handing out nine assists and pulling down seven rebounds as the Bulldogs shot 56.9 percent (33-of-58) from the floor and 57.9 percent (11-of-19) from behind the arc in the win.

Wingate went up by as many as 16 in the first half, led by 10 points by Smith. A three-pointer by Roper at the 14:40 mark gave the Tornados their only lead of the opening period at 7-6 as the senior guard drained the shot off the assist from Hendrix, but Wingate followed with a 7-0 run to take control of the game and go into the half with the 41-26 lead.

In the second half, the Bulldogs would lead by as much as 21 points at the 10:16 mark following an Eddie Lewis layup off the fast break to put Wingate up 67-46. Following a Dombrowski trey and a pair of free throws by Jordan, Roper would score 14 of Brevard’s next 16 points, hitting four three-pointers during the stretch to cut the game back to within single digits at 75-67 with 4:09 to play.

However, Jeffrey Parker followed the stretch with a tip-in off a Turner miss to extend the lead back to 10 and despite challenges by the Tornados as Dombrowski and Roper both hit late three’s the Bulldogs went six-of-eight from the free throw line in the final 52 seconds of the game to close out the 87-77 victory.

The sixth-seeded Tornados turn right back around on Wednesday, March 2nd, and take on a familiar foe as they travel to Wingate, N.C. in a rematch of both tonight’s game, and last year’s Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Tournament first round game against the third-seeded Wingate Bulldogs. Tipoff in Cuddy Arena is set for 8 p.m.
