Senior guard selected to the Second Team after leading Brevard to conference tournament
Morrow, Ga. - Josh Roper was selected to the 2011 Division II Daktronics Men’s Basketball All-South Atlantic Region Second Team, as announced Wednesday afternoon.
Roper finished up his senior season at Brevard leading the SAC in scoring with 21.2 points per game and in steals with 2.56 per game and was a two-time South Atlantic Conference Player of the Week this year. Roper also dots the BC record book, sitting in the top ten in multiple single game, single season and career records in various categories including: points, points per game, field goals, field goal attempts, field goal percentage, free throws, free throw attempts, free throw percentage, three-pointers made, three-pointers attempted, assists and steals.
Pfeiffer’s Chris Woods was selected as the 2010-11 Daktronics Division II Southeast Region Player of the Year for men’s basketball, which was announced on Wednesday. In addition to his postseason award, Woods was also selected first team All-Southeast Region in the process. He is joined on the All-Region first team by Georgia Southwestern’s Phillip Brown, Lincoln Memorial’s Desmond Johnson, Augusta State’s George Johnson and Clayton State’s Timmy Downs.
With the first team selection, all five players are automatically eligible for Daktronics Division II All-American honors.
Woods, a 6-foot-5 senior forward from Greensboro, N.C., finished his distinguished career at Pfeiffer by averaging 24 points and 10 rebounds a game this season for the , while shooting 60 percent from the field. He was selected first team All-Conference Carolinas for a third straight season and was honored as the Conference Carolinas Player of the Year. Woods led Conference Carolinas in scoring, and was ranked second in rebounding and field goal percentage and fourth in blocked shots.
Woods finished his career at Pfeiffer with over 2,000 points.
Brown, a 6-7 junior forward from Jonesboro, Ga., spearheaded Georgia Southwestern’s dramatic turnaround to an NCAA Division II National Tournament berth this season as a first team All-Peach Belt Conference selection and PBC Player of the Year. He averaged 15 points and 11 rebounds a game and shot 63 percent from the field, leading the PBC in both rebounding and field goal percentage. A 6-6 junior forward from Lynch, Ky., Desmond Johnson was a key catalyst in what has been a banner season so far at Lincoln Memorial. He was selected first team All-South Atlantic Conference and was the SAC Player of the Year, averaging 15 points, nine rebounds and shooting 63 percent from the field.
George Johnson, a 6-4 senior guard from Arlington, Va., helped pace Augusta State to both the PBC regular season and tournament titles after transferring from Gannon. He was selected first team All-PBC, averaging 16 points and four rebounds a game. In addition, Johnson shot 44 percent from 3-point range to lead the PBC. Downs, a 5-6 senior guard from Greenville, S.C., finished the season ranked second in the Peach Belt Conference in scoring at 19.6 points a game. He also led the conference in steals and ranked second in assists to garner first team All-Peach Belt honors for Clayton State.
