Cycling opens the season at ETSU

Johnson City, Tn. - The Brevard College Cycling team opened up the season on September 6th and 7th at Eastern Tennessee State University with 4 different events.

The first race of the weekend was the downhill event that featured a course well suited to our team.  The track featured jumps, rock gardens, and drops that challenged the riders all the way down.

Johanne Tuttle led the team with a win in the women’s event, with Julia Tellman following close behind in 4th.  Dan Ennis held it down for the men, placing 2nd against some of the best riders in the country.  Danny Cesare placed 8th.  Tuttle also raced well in the dual Slalom event, placing 3rd.  Tellman placed 9th in her first attempt at the discipline.

The men were both put out disappointingly early in their events, as both of them crashed during their runs.  Cesare and Ennis placed 5th and 6th respectively.

Moving onto the endurance cross country event, the team had some mixed results.  The women raced strong, and surprisingly it was gravity specialist Tuttle that led the results in 3rd.  Tellman had a solid race, placing 4th just behind her teammate.  On the men’s side, it was once again a gravity specialist leading the charge with Ennis getting a very solid 8th place finish.  He was followed by Matt St. Marie, Matt Wells, and Tristan Cowie in 9th, 10th, and 11th respectively and Tim Reinhart in 21st.  Cowie had a very disappointing race after a hard crash took him out of contention for the win.

In the Men’s and Women’s B classes, Trey Compton placed 14th followed by James Chaput in 18th.  Liz Walker was forced to abandon her race.  The final event of the weekend was the short track that saw Tellman earn a 5th place finish, and Tuttle a 10th in the women’s event.  The men finished with Cowie on top in 5th followed by Wells in 9th, St. Marie in 10th, Ennis in 15th and Reinhart in 28th.  The Men’s and Women’s B races saw Compton in 10th and Chaput in 17th, while Walker completed her first race in 4th.

The BC cycling team is back in action as they host their first collegiate event next weekend, September 13-14.
