Tornados swept by Bulldogs in Wingate

Brevard fell 5-0 and 5-1 in the doubleheader sweep

Wingate, N.C. – The Brevard College softball team dropped a pair of games at Wingate University on Saturday. The Tornados fell 5-0 in the opener and dropped the second game by a score of 5-1.

Brevard fell to 28-15 on the season and 6-8 in South Atlantic Conference play, while Wingate improved to 27-12 and 8-6 in SAC match-ups.

The Tornados were unable to get the offense moving in the opener, as they fell 5-0. Wingate took a 1-0 lead in the second inning when Brittany Loudermilt hit an RBI single.

The Bulldogs added on to their lead in the fourth by scoring a pair of runs on an error and a passed ball, putting Wingate up 3-0.

In the fifth, Wingate put another pair of runs on the board to give them the final 5-0 edge.

Martika Elmore (Fayetteville, N.C.) started the game for BC and was touched for three runs, two earned on four hits. Elmore struck out seven and was charged with the loss, falling to 16-8. Alyssa Miller (Davie, Fla.) pitched the final 1.2 innings for Brevard. Allison Smith picked up the win throwing a complete game shutout. Smith struck out seven in the win, advancing to 18-5.

Wingate took a quick 1-0 lead in the first when Emily Chavis hit a sacrifice fly.

The Bulldogs added four runs in the fifth when Chavis hit an RBI double and Maureen Sandidge hit a three-run homer to put Wingate up 5-0.

The Tornados tried to chip at the Wingate lead but were only able to plate one in the sixth when Emily Boykin (Chapel Hill, N.C.) singled home Chelsi Mallory (Mechanicsville, Va.).

Miller pitched all six innings for Brevard and fell to 12-7 on the year after being charged with the loss. She was touched for five runs on three hits. Ashley Brown moved to 6-4 after after surrendering one run on seven hits.

At the plate, Mallory went 2-for-3 and scored the only Tornados run. Brittany Fowler (Waterloo, Ontario, CANADA) added a pair of base knocks in the loss.

The Tornados are back in action on Monday, April 11th when they travel to Jefferson City, Tennessee to take on the Carson-Newman Eagles. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.
