White defeats Blue at 2011 BC Spring Football Game

Church scores twice as the Tornados complete Spring practice

Brevard, N.C. - Led by a pair of touchdown runs by Derek Church and a key stop on the goal line by BC’s C.J. Wilson, the White team defeated the Blue team by a score of 24-0 on Sunday afternoon at Brevard Memorial Stadium.

The Tornados took the field for the final time of the 2011 spring season in front of family and friends on Sunday, having to move their game back due to poor field conditions on Saturday afternoon, but with a clear sky and warm day, the players and the fans enjoyed the atmosphere of the Spring Game.

Prior to the Spring Game, the BC football coaching staff took the field at 1:30 p.m., presenting a free clinic to the local players in the Brevard community. The coaching staff split up the 11 boys and ran them through a series of drills, teaching them the fundamentals of the game and how to position themselves, with emphasis being placed in form tackling, defensive back pedaling and reacting, offensive lineman drills and proper dropbacks and form throwing from the quarterback position.

After the clinic, the BC football team took the field. During warm-ups and throughout the game, the crowd was entertained by various interviews hosted by Jermichael Tanner and Drew Schauss were played over the loudspeakers at the stadium, as the duo were able to interact with players, coaches and fans alike, seeking insight from all parties about the game.

Early in the contest, Thadus Benton III rumbled up the middle for a 46 yard gain on the first drive, but the defense stiffened up and forced the turnover on downs inside White territory.

The game was scoreless through the first quarter as both defenses took charge in the game, holding the offense off the scoreboard. However, in the second quarter, after a Michael Gist interception, Derek Church rumbled into the end zone from three yards out to put the White team on the board 7-0.

Arrick Blevins would add a 28 yard field goal later in the half to put the score at 10-0 and Church would find the end zone again early in third quarter, this time from four yards out to put the score at 17-0.

The Blue team would put together their best drive of the game, reaching the goal line in the fourth quarter, but the White defense stiffened up and on fourth down, Wilson broke through the line of scrimmage, tackling the running back in the backfield to end the greatest threat to the shutout.

Eric Watts and Cole Weeks hooked up for the final points of the game, as Weeks connected with Watts down the left sideline and the rising senior took it the distance, going 76 yards on the play for the final score of the game.

The Tornados open the 2011 Football Season on the road on Saturday, September 3rd, in Boiling Springs, N.C., as they take on Division I Gardner-Webb University.
