Phase II of Free Weight Room Construction is underwayJune 21, 2011
Crews began pouring the concrete floor on Tuesday morning
Brevard, N.C. - Construction is now underway on the second phase of Brevard College’s free weight room facility expansion. Crews began prepping the facility on June 3rd and began pouring the concrete floor on June 21st for the project that will allow the College to triple the size of its existing free weight room.
"Thanks to the wonderful support of our Tornado Club members and alumni, Brevard College will be able to enhance and expand a space that will not only strengthen our athletic program but encourage student wellness and meet the needs of our entire campus community," said Brevard College Director of Athletics Kim Pate.
Once completed, the free weight room, which is located in the College’s Boshamer Gymnasium, will offer 5,500 square feet of work out space to the campus community. The open, glass wall setting will also feature the latest weight training and conditioning equipment.
Pate said she expects the pouring of concrete to wrap up by the end of June and hopes to move forward with the completion of phase two construction including installation of HVAC, floor covering, and cosmetic upgrades to the room's interior by the end of the year. The final phase of the project will consist of moving and setting up the equipment from the old weight room as well as placing new equipment in the area.
The free weight room expansion is part of the College’s new Chick Martin Training Center, which is named in honor of retired coach, athletic director, teacher, mentor, advocate and community member Chick Martin. Last year, the Brevard College Athletics Department continued its fundraising efforts for the training center by launching the Chick Martin Challenge. Those efforts allowed the College to continue work on the first phase of the free weight room expansion last summer.
Ken Kolb, president of the Tornado Club, said the club will continue to pursue funding from individuals, corporations and associations to help the College and the Athletic Department complete the Chick Martin Training Center project.
"We are pleased to help muster donor support from within our community that is designed to give our Brevard College student-athletes the first-class weight room facility they have long-deserved," said Kolb.
Kolb added that several local companies and businessmen have been instrumental in helping with the project, including Denny Whitmire of Jerry T. Whitmire Grading, Tom Cathey of Vulcan Materials, Tom Shipman of BEF Excavating, as well as Bruce Metcalf.
Pate also wanted to pay special recognition to Jack & Marcia Schneider, and Abbey Owen of Cardinal Building who have so generously offered their services and expertise in leading this project from its inception as well as helping out with a number of other projects on campus including a renovation to the baseball batting cages and the construction of the electronic sign.
This is the third capital project initiative that the Tornado Club has raised funds for since it was formed in 2006. The Club also helped fund the new Brevard College electronic sign and renovation of the College’s main gym, including its new bleachers.
