Weisenfluh wins Downhill in Tornados season opener
Cycling team opens up the year with 18 top 10 finishes

Johnson City, Tenn. - The Brevard College Cycling team opened up the 2011 Fall Mountain Bike season this past weekend at East Tennessee State University among the 16 teams that competed in the first Southeast Collegiate Conference mountain bike series.
With a number of quality teams and riders returning, the Southeast Conference is one of the strongest conferences in the country, but the Tornados proved once again they were ready for the challenge of defending their National Championship title for the third consecutive season.
Kate Weisenfluh returned to give the Tornados their first individual victory of the season as she outdistanced the field in the Downhill event. Madison Capps and Morgan Sykes also finished in the top 10 in the downhill field for the women. Park Baker, Asher Blackmore, Tripp Bagnal and David Simmons were also in the top 10 in the downhill for the men, with Baker and Blackmore earning podium finishes in the top five.
In the cross country and short track events, Lewis Gaffney finishes fourth overall in both events, while Scott Hoffner was also in the top 10 in both events, finishing seventh in the cross country and ninth in the short track in the Men’s A Group. Keith Marek added third and fourth place finishes in both events in the Men’s B Group.
In the final event of the weekend, the Dual Slalom, Weisenfluh again led the way, placing third overall, while Capps and Sykes placed in the top 10. Tripp Bagnal was also in the top 10 on the men’s side, finishing eighth overall.
"I was very pleased with the performances of the team thus far and I see them continuing to gain momentum through September and into October," said Coach Sheedy. "This is an awesome team and I know they’re capable of being the best Division II team in the country for the third year running."
The Tornados take a week off before traveling down to Atlanta, Ga. to take part in the Georgia Tech meet. First event of the two day weekend starts on September 10th.
