Oswalt, Atkinson lead Tornados in defeat
Brevard falls to #16 Wingate in straight sets
Wingate, N.C. - Joy Oswalt led the way with six kills and Jamie Atkinson continued her all-around play on the court with five kills, five digs and four blocks, but it was not enough as the Tornados fell to the 16th-ranked Wingate Bulldogs on Thursday evening in Cuddy Arena, 25-7, 25-23, 25-21.
The Bulldogs (10-0, 5-0 SAC) jumped on the Tornados (3-7, 0-4 SAC) in the opening set, building a 12-3 lead on the back of four aces by Maggie Malone. Wingate would close out the first set quickly with the final seven points, handing the Tornados the 25-7 defeat to go up 1-0.
The second set was tightly contested as an Oswalt kill along with a pair of Wingate errors, put the Tornados on top 16-12. A pair of kills by Susie Murach helped trim the deficit to two at 19-17 and back-to-back Cory McGowan kills put the Bulldogs on top 20-19, while a Brevard error pushed the lead to two. The Tornados tied the set at 22, getting a pair of blocks from Atkinson, but the Bulldogs were able to close out the set as Liz Willis and McGowan answered with kills, while McGowan would cap the frame with a kill.
A kill from Atkinson tied the third set at 14, but Wingate answered with seven consecutive points to blow the final frame open. Lexi Potter started the flurry with a kill, while Kelsey Handel added two kills and a block in the spurt. Brevard cut the deficit to three on an ace from sophomore outside hitter Erin Cox. An ace from Lindsey Rogers made the score 23-21, but an error from the Tornados pushed the Wingate advantage to three at 24-21 and Malone capped the match with her fifth ace.
Bethany Stevenson had 16 assists and eight digs for the Tornados in the match while Rogers had a match high 14 digs for Brevard.
The Tornados are back on the road in South Atlantic Conference action as they travel to Salisbury, N.C. on Saturday, September 24th, as they take on Catawba College. First serve between the Tornados and the Indians is set for 2 p.m.
