Tornados unable to find net against Mars Hill, 5-0October 1, 2011
Rasinmaki, Silva and Schuurman launch shots in loss
Brevard, N.C. - Jack Shaw had five saves and Tommi Rasinmaki, Paulo Silva and Scott Schuurman all had scoring opportunities, but Zac Scott recorded three saves and Alex Mullen recorded his first collegiate hat trick as the Tornados fell to the Lions on Saturday afternoon at the BC Soccer Field, 5-0.
Rasinmaki and Patrick Urmson challenged the Mars Hill defense early, but the Lions pressed the attack on the BC side of the field as Stephen Biven recorded the first goal of the game at the 12:52 mark as he received the through ball from Isaiah Schafer at the top left corner of the box and lined his shot in the upper right corner over Shaw to give Mars Hill the early 1-0 lead.
Andre Corvello nearly evened the score as he received a beautiful pass over the Mars Hill defenders, leaving the freshman one-on-one with Scott in the goal box, but Corvello’s shot was pushed to the right, leaving the score at 1-0.
Mullen placed his first goal of the game at the 33:43 mark off the assist from Rury Caulfield as he collected the ball inside the box and touched it into the net, giving the Lions the 2-0 lead heading into the half.
Mullen recorded two more goals in the second half as he collected the Caulfield’s corner kick and drilled it home, then placed the through ball from Biven into the net, and Brandon Tardioli added the final score of the game as he collected the ricochet from the pass by Gregg Munn in front of the open BC goal, to give the Lions their final point of the match.
Schuurman had the final scoring opportunity by either team, as the senior from Edmonton, Alberta, Canada took the pass inside the MHC box and launched a shot with his left foot, but Scott’s diving save knocked the ball away, ending the Tornados threat and closing out the 5-0 victory.
The Tornados return to the road on Monday, October 3rd, as they travel to Charlotte, N.C. for a non-conference match against Queens University of Charlotte. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
