Uuttu, Jussila lead Tornados past Queens, 1-0
Brevard records the shutout over the Royals on the road
Charlotte, N.C. - Jami Uuttu found the back of the net in the first three minutes and Pauli Jussila faced 11 shots without giving up the matching score as the Tornados recorded their first win of the 2011 season on Monday evening in defeating Queens University of Charlotte, 1-0.
Felipe Mendonca launched the first shot of the game at the 2:46 mark for the Tornados (1-9-1), but Queens (2-6) goalkeeper Giancarlo Aristondo made the save. However, Aristondo was unable to keep the ball in his possession and Uuttu pounced in front of the goal, netting the rebound to put the Tornados up 1-0 three minutes into the match.
The remainder of the first half was a defensive battle with neither team able to place a shot on goal as the Tornados went into the break with the 1-0 lead intact.
The offense picked up in the second half as Marcelo Betcer and Tommi Rasinmaki targeted shots on goal, but Aristondo proved up to the task, while Felipe Netto and Bryan White had their shots redirected by Jussila.
A header by Netto was saved by Jussila at the 73:08 mark and Jeremy Chambers fired a pair of shots in the 82nd minute, with one hitting the crossbar, but neither was able to knot the goal up.
Mendonca also saw a shot hit off the crossbar as he attempted to provide the Tornados with a cushion as the game headed down to an exciting finish, but after Chambers’ header went wide of the net with seconds remaining in the game, Brevard was able to celebrate on the field as they closed out the shutout.
Brevard remains on the road this weekend as they jump back into South Atlantic Conference play on Saturday, October 8th, against Wingate University. Kickoff between the Tornados and the Bulldogs is set for 4 p.m.
