Box Score

Brevard, N.C. - Bailey Varley scored her 22nd career goal with the Tornados on Senior Day as Brevard hosted Catawba College on Saturday afternoon, but goals by Juliana Conte and Athena Bless helped the Indians crash the party as the Tornados fell 2-1 in their final action of the 2011 season.

On a brisk autumn day, the Indians (6-10, 4-5 SAC) challenged the BC (3-14, 0-9 SAC) goalkeeper Jordan Box early as Marissa DiMarco launched a pair of shots in the first 10 minutes.

Varley launched the first shot for the Tornados at the 14:12 mark, but her offering was corralled by Catawba goalkeeper Lindsay Webster to keep the score tied at zero.

Conte broke the scoreless tie at the 32:50 mark, collecting the ball lofted over the BC defense by Sydney Robertson and kneeing the ball into the lower right corner of the net to put the Indians ahead 1-0.

Less than a minute later, Catawba added to their total at the 33:31 mark, with Robertson again assisting as her corner kick went to the head of Bless, who redirected the shot into the net to give the Indians the 2-0 advantage.

Varley cut into the lead at the 36:00 mark as Althea Dunn lofted a ball from 60 yards out to the streaking forward and Varley slid past the defender, placing the ball over the advancing goalkeeper and into the left corner of the net to cut the score down to 2-1.

Chelsea Freeman was able to get off a shot for the Tornados in the second half and the keeper combination of Brittany Webster and Crissy Moran kept the Indians off the board. The Tornados final chance to tie the match came at the 88:45 mark as Bundy drilled a shot at the goal, but Webster tipped the ball up and over the net to end the BC scoring threat as Catawba defeated Brevard, 2-1.

The Tornados recognized 2011 seniors Jordan Box, Caitlin Hubbard, Chelsea Freeman, Bailey Varley, Chelsea Watson, Rachael Laughlin, Janet Basinger, Alyssa Caracena in a brief ceremony after the match, as well as Associate Head Coach Caity Brown in her final match with the Tornados.

Brevard finishes the season with a 3-14 record, 0-9 in the South Atlantic Conference in their fourth season as members of the SAC and the NCAA Division II.
