BC Falls at Wingate 3-0 in SAC Volleyball ActionSeptember 27, 2008
Wingate, N.C. – The Brevard College women’s volleyball team played their second match in two days on Saturday night, as Coach Skeffington’s squad fell on the road at Wingate University 3-0 (17-25, 16-25, 19-25).
The loss drops the Tornados to 8-7 overall and 1-4 in the South Atlantic Conference. With the win Wingate improves to 14-1 overall and tops in the SAC with a conference record of 4-0.
In the opening set, a big block by BC hitters Brooke Seaman and Kirstan Carlson tied the first set at 10-10. However, Wingate scored the next five points to take a 15-10 lead, which was highlighted by Wingate freshman Janice Ehorn, who had a kill and an ace in the run.
The Bulldogs stretched the lead to seven on a kill from sophomore middle blocker Rebecca Bloemer, before a kill from BC junior Chelsey Trojan cut the lead to five at 21-16. The Bulldogs would score four of the final five points of the set, capped off by a kill from Willis.
Wingate jumped out to an 18-9 lead in the second set, a run that included three consecutive kills from Billo and two blocks from Billo and junior middle blocker Megan McVicker. The Tornados cut the lead to seven at 19-12 on a service ace from freshman setter Kari Sims, but would get any closer than seven points, with Billo finishing off the set with a kill to give the Bulldogs the 25-16 win.
In the third set, the Bulldogs again took an early lead, as a kill from McVicker put the Bulldogs up 15-9. The Tornados cut the lead to five at 18-13 on a Wingate error, yet Wingate responded with four consecutive points to make it 22-13.
Brevard cut the lead to five on a block from Seaman and junior outside hitter Megan Street to make it 24-19. Wingate would finish off the match on the next point, via a Billo kill.
BC was led by Trojan’s seven kills and 12 digs, while freshman Jordei Osby had a career-high six kills for the three set match. Libero Rebecca Schoonover posted 11 digs. Junior middle hitter Seaman had four kills and eight blocks for Brevard.
For Wingate sophomore outside hitter Lauren Billo led the Wingate attack with 10 kills. Sophomore outside hitter Heather Myklebust added eight kills while senior middle blocker Ashley Craven chipped in with six. Freshman libero Maggie Malone led the Bulldogs with a match-high 17 digs while freshman setter Liz Willis handed out 19 assists.
The Tornados will step out of SAC play but continue on their current road trip with their third consecutive road match on Saturday, October 4 at Converse College in Spartanburg, S.C. The match is slated for a 1 p.m. start time. Wingate will be back in action on Tuesday, September 30 when they will travel to Hickory, N.C. for a 7 p.m. showdown with the Lady Bears of Lenoir-Rhyne University.
