Tornados slug their way past the Golden Bulls

Davenport records six hits, Mallory drives in five in sweep

Charlotte, N.C. - Meredith Davenport recorded six hits and Alyssa Miller and Kayla Clemens pitched complete games as the Tornados recorded a sweep over Johnson C. Smith on Thursday afternoon, winning both games at Biddleville Park, 3-2 and 11-1.

Davenport was 3-for-4 in both games on the afternoon, while Chelsi Mallory drove in five runs as the Tornados open the 2012 season with a pair of victories over the Golden Bulls.

Clemens hit the go-ahead sacrifice fly in the top of the fifth inning, scoring Davenport from third to back a strong pitching performance by Miller (1-0) as the sophomore right-hander went the distance, striking out nine while allowing four hits in improving to 1-0 on the season.

The Tornados broke open a scoreless tie in the fourth inning as Brittany Tucker and Emily Boykin gave Brevard runners on second and third with one out following a double steal. Tucker scored on an error by the third baseman, crossing the plate for the first BC run of the game, while Heather Morris drove in Boykin on a sacrifice fly ball to centerfield, giving the Tornados the 2-0 advantage.

Johnson C. Smith battled back in the bottom half of the inning as Elizabeth McElveen hit a one-out single and advanced to third on Jasmine Jackson’s double. After Miller retired Britney Warren on an infield popup, the Golden Bulls tied the game up as Alexandra Buckley drilled a double to left centerfield, clearing the bases to knot the score at two.

Brevard placed the go-ahead run across the plate in the fifth as Meredith Davenport and Ally Davenport reached on back-to-back singles to lead off the inning. Meredith Davenport advanced to third on Mallory’s fly ball to centerfield, and came home on Clemens’ sacrifice fly. The Tornados continued to threaten in the inning as Tucker reached on an error, moving Ally Davenport to third with two outs, but JCSU starter Stacy Peralta (0-2) retired the side to end the scoring chance.

Johnson C. Smith threatened to tie the game up in the bottom of the sixth as Samantha Smith reached on an error to lead off the inning, moving over to third base with one out following a stolen base and a passed ball. However, Miller ended the threat, retiring Jackson on strikes and forcing a groundout to escape the jam with the lead intact.

Miller closed out the contest, retiring the side in the bottom of the seventh by striking out two of the three batters in the inning to give the Tornados the 3-2 victory.

An offensive explosion paced the Tornados to the victory in the nightcap of the doubleheader as seven consecutive batters recorded hits in the fourth inning, plating six runs to back Clemens (1-0) debut on the mound as the BC sophomore pitched a two-hitter, retiring eight on strikes in the 11-1 victory.

Brevard opened the game scoring three runs in the top of the first off JCSU starter Peralta as Meredith Davenport led off the game with a bunt single. After a sacrifice bunt moved her to second base, Mallory tripled to right field, bringing home the first run of the contest. Clemens followed with a single down the left field line, bringing Mallory across the plate and Boykin doubled later in the inning, scoring Clemens to stake Brevard to the 3-0 lead.

Smith provided excitement for the Golden Bulls in the bottom half of the inning, reaching on a bunt single. She made her way around the bases, stealing second and following a strikeout, Smith stole third and home, coming across the plate with her fourth stolen base of the day.

Brevard expanded on their lead in the top of the fourth as eight of the 10 batters reached base in the inning. With one out, Morris started the hit streak with a double to left centerfield, which was followed by singles by Brittany Jones, Meredith Davenport and Ally Davenport before a double by Mallory cleared the bases. Clemens and Tucker followed with back-to-back doubles, completing the damage as the Tornados went up 9-1 after four.

The Tornados plated two more runs in the fifth as Davenport doubled in Morris with one out and Mallory’s sacrifice fly to right field scored Jones give Brevard the 11-1 lead. Clemens closed out the game in the bottom half of the inning, striking out the side to complete the sweep.

Brevard opens up their home portion of the 2012 season as they welcome Belmont Abbey to the BC Softball Field on Saturday, February 11th. First pitch of the doubleheader between the Tornados and the Crusaders is set for 1 p.m.
