Women's Soccer Falls At Lincoln Memorial, 1-0October 2, 2008
Loss is fourth in a row for Tornados
Harrogate, Tenn. - The Brevard College Women's Soccer team hung tough Thursday night, but were overtaken in the end by Lincoln Memorial University, 1-0, in South Atlantic Conference action. The loss drops the Tornados to 4-8 (0-4 SAC), while the Lady Railsplitters improve to 6-1-1 (1-1 SAC).
Sophomore forward Sarah Harvey (Daventry, England) netted the game's only goal, in the 77th minute. The goal was Harvey's first of the season.
Despite the narrow margin, the Lady 'Splitters controlled the ball for much of the evening, taking 35 shots to Brevard's two. LMU also took the match's only eight corners. Still, a resilient Brevard backline kept their opponents off of the scoreboard until the game's waning moments.
With less than 14 minutes remaining in the match, Harvey intercepted a Brevard pass, dribbled around a pair of defensive players, and launched a shot from 20 yards out that sailed past BC goalkeeper Sydney Douglas (Houston, Tex.) and into the back of the net, making the score 1-0. Lincoln Memorial, ranked 10th in the Southeast Region, kept the Tornados from scoring an equalizer to preserve their first SAC win of the season.
Brevard's Ashley Fincher (Burns, Tenn.) had an opportunity to tie the score in the 79th minute, but her shot was turned away by LMU keeper Denise De Resende (Taguatinga, Brazil). The shot was the only Brevard attempt to be on target for the game. Douglas stopped nine of the ten shots Lincoln Memorial put on target.
Brevard will look to get back on the winning track when they travel to Warren Wilson College on Saturday for a 1 p.m. match. Lincoln Memorial travels to Cincinnati Christian next Monday, with the first kick coming at. 4 p.m.
