Tornados to host annual Play 4Kay game on Saturday

Brevard, N.C. - The Brevard College basketball teams will host their annual Play 4Kay Day, for the Tornados home games on Saturday, February 18th, against Lenoir-Rhyne University. The women’s game will tipoff at 2 p.m. in Boshamer Gymnasium, while the men will tipoff against the Bears at 4 p.m.

The Play 4Kay initiative is a global, unified effort for the Women's Basketball Coaches Association's (WBCA) nation of coaches to assist in raising breast cancer awareness on the court, across campuses, in communities and beyond.

All Brevard College basketball players, coaches and support staff will be wearing pink t-shirts, sponsored by the Transylvania Regional Hospital on game day to promote awareness of the disease. All gate proceeds for the Feb. 18 basketball games will be donated to the Kay Yow Cancer Fund. Additional donations will also be collected throughout the evening’s festivities.

The Brevard College Student-Athlete Advisory Committee will be selling Breast Cancer Awareness items and Pink Ribbons to honor friends and loved ones affected by cancer and the Transylvania Regional Hospital will have a booth set up in the lobby of Boshamer Gymnasium to pass out literature concerning breast cancer. There will also be a starting lineup of Breast Cancer survivors announced in conjunction with the BC women’s basketball team starters in the pregame ceremonies. Halftime of the women's and men's games will be performed by the Pisgah Dance Academy and the Brevard College cheerleaders.

The WBCA began Play 4Kay as an initiative to raise breast cancer awareness in women's basketball, on campuses and in communities. The late Kay Yow, former North Carolina State University head women's basketball coach, served as the catalyst for the initiative after her third reoccurrence of breast cancer in 2006.

In 2007, more than 120 schools unified for this effort and helped make the inaugural year a success. In 2008, over 1,200 teams and organizations participated, reaching over 830,000 fans and raising over $930,000 for breast cancer awareness and research. The 2009 campaign raised over $1.3 million, reached over 912,000 fans, unified more than 1,600 participating teams and organizations, and saw 56+ schools break attendance records at their event. In 2010, over 1,800 participants came together to surpass $1,045,000 in donations and reached more than 922,000 fans across the nation. Over 22 schools broke attendance records through their participation.

Overall, the WBCA Pink Zone has raised over $5.2 Million for the Kay Yow foundation in only five years.
