Schauss' career high guides Brevard past Lenoir-Rhyne, 88-75

Tanner also sets career high as Tornados top Bears in Boshamer

Brevard, N.C. - Drew Schauss connected on six three-pointers in scoring a career high 25 points as the Tornados shot over 60.0 percent from the floor for the second consecutive game inside Boshamer Gymnasium in topping Lenoir-Rhyne on Saturday afternoon, 88-75.

For the second time this season, the Tornados (5-21, 4-12 SAC) hit six consecutive three-pointers in a game as Gaither Hendrix, Schauss and Jermichael Tanner did not miss from behind the arc for more than five minutes in the second half to help Brevard offset a combined 55 points between Lenoir-Rhyne’s (12-13, 8-8 SAC) D.J. Blackmon and Allan Jones as Brevard keeps their tournament hopes alive with their victory over the Bears.

Schauss was 9-for-14 from the floor and 6-for-8 from behind the arc in scoring a career high 25 points as Brevard shot 61.2 percent (30-49) from the floor in the contest. Hendrix added 18 points, drilling four treys as the Tornados shot 57.7 percent (15-26) from behind the arc as a team in the game. Tanner added a career high 16 points and four assists, while Dominique Pickett scored 11 points with three three-pointers in recording the win.

Blackmon led all players with 31 points, going 11-for-15 from the floor in the contest as Lenoir-Rhyne shot 55.6 percent (39-54) as a team in the game. Jones was also 11-for-15 from the floor in scoring 24 points and dished out five assists, while Bryce Hawkins added seven points off the bench as the Bears drop to .500 in South Atlantic Conference play on the season.

Tanner opened up the game with a three-pointer on the first BC possession, but Lenoir-Rhyne built the early lead, going up 7-3 on back-to-back baskets by Blackmon and Jones. The Bears held the lead through three ties in the first half, going up 13-12 on a pair of free throws by Hawkins before the Tornados took control of the ball game as Moose drove in for a layup with 11:21 on the clock to put Brevard up 14-13.

Pickett connected on a three-pointer on the next BC possession as Brevard built a double-digit lead in the first half as Schauss hit three consecutive three-pointers and Pickett drained another three from the left wing as Brevard went up 40-30 with 1:42 left in the half. The Bears closed out the half with a 7-2 run as R.J. McClure hit a jumper with seven ticks left before the break as Brevard held the 42-37 halftime advantage.

Jones opened up the half with a layup, cutting the Brevard lead down to three points, but the Tornados responded with their run from behind the arc as Hendrix drained three three-pointers, Tanner hit one from the top of the key and Schauss added two more treys as BC went up 64-49 with 13:51 remaining in the game.

Lenoir-Rhyne brought the game back to within single digits with under 10 minutes remaining as B.J. Beasley drove in for the layup with 9:47 on the clock, cutting the lead to 66-57, but Tanner answered with a jumper and Schauss hit another three-pointer to expand the lead back to 14. Brevard went up by as many as 17 points in the contest as Moose scored a layup off the assist from Hendrix with 2:37 remaining as the Tornados coasted to the 88-75 victory.

Brevard remains at home on Wednesday, February 22nd, as the Tornados host Newberry College on Senior Day as BC honors seniors Jermichael Tanner, Gaither Hendrix and Michael Gist in their final game in Boshamer Gymnasium. Tipoff between the Tornados and the Wolves is set for 8 p.m.
