Clemens leads Tornados on mound and at plate in split with Pfeiffer
Tornados fall in game one, rebound to top Falcons in night cap
Misenheimer, N.C. - The Brevard College softball team split with Pfeiffer University on Saturday afternoon at Jack Ingram Field as the Falcons took game one behind Celia Dew’s RBI single in the sixth inning, breaking a 1-1 tie, while the Tornados rallied in the nightcap behind the pitching and hitting of Kayla Clemens to take game two 8-1.
Brevard moves to 5-1 on the season, while Pfeiffer is now 2-2 in 2012.
Game One: Pfeiffer 2, Brevard 1
The Falcons handed the Tornados their first loss of the season as Dew was a perfect 3-for-3 from the plate in support of Shelby Brown as Pfeiffer took the first game of the doubleheader.
Ashlee Ellen broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the fourth inning, driving a one-out solo home run down the left field line off BC starter Alyssa Miller (2-1) to put the Falcons on the board.
Brevard struck back in the top of the fifth as Emily Boykin led off the inning with a double down the left field line. A sacrifice bunt moved Boykin to third base and Brittany Jones brought her home on a groundout, knotting the game up at 1 apiece.
The Tornados threatened to take the lead in the sixth, placing runners in scoring position with one out as Brittany Fowler reached on a fielder’s choice and Chelsi Mallory knocked a single to centerfield to put Brevard in position to take the lead. However, Brown was able to force the Tornados into a double play to escape the jam, ending the BC threat.
Hannah Jackson led off the bottom of the sixth with a base hit and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt. After Miller retired Kirsten Patterson on strikes, Dew put the Falcons ahead driving a base hit into left field scoring Jackson.
Brown retired the side in the top of the seventh to end the contest in favor of Pfeiffer.
Game Two: Brevard 8, Pfeiffer 1
Clemens threw a complete game four-hitter and drove a two-run home run in the Tornados six run sixth inning as Brevard topped Pfeiffer in earning the split on Saturday afternoon with their 8-1 victory in the night cap.
Maddie Fletcher drove in a run in the top of the second with a base hit, scoring Clemens and Brittany Tucker scored on a wild pitch to put Brevard up early against Falcons starter Melanie Conklin.
Pfeiffer cut into the lead in the bottom of the third as Lindsey Russell led off the inning with a base hit. Sadie Saine reached on a two-out error, scoring Russell from second base to put Pfeiffer back within striking distance, but Saine was caught stealing to end the inning.
The Tornados pulled away in the top of the sixth as the first four BC hitters reached base en route to a six run inning, putting Brevard up 8-1. Meredith Davenport and Fowler hit back-to-back singles to lead off the inning, and Mallory followed by clearing the bases with a double down the left field line. Clemens followed on two pitches later, driving the ball over the left field fence to put BC up 6-1.
Brevard continued to connect in the inning as Jones and Ally Davenport reached on a pair of singles with two out in the inning and Meredith Davenport brought both in, reaching on a fielding error to give the Tornados the commanding lead.
The Falcons placed runners on base in both the sixth and the seventh inning, but Clemens was able to keep Pfeiffer off the scoreboard as the Tornados earned the split with the 8-1 victory.
Brevard remains on the road as they continue non-conference action on Tuesday, February 21st in Milligan, Tenn. against Milligan College. First pitch in the doubleheader between the Tornados and the Buffaloes is set for 2 p.m.
