Tornados unable to hold off Wolves on Senior Day, 64-59
Flippo, Brendle and Schlobohm play final contest in Boshamer Gymnasium
Brevard, N.C. - A pair of double-doubles by Haylee Lepaio and Neicy Lewis spoiled Brevard’s Senior Day on Wednesday evening as the Tornados fell to the visiting Newberry Wolves, 64-59.
Brevard (6-19, 1-16 SAC) seniors Holli Flippo, Lindsay Brendle and Anna Schlobohm combined for 35 points on the evening for the Tornados in their final contest in Boshamer Gymnasium, but Newberry (14-11, 9-8 SAC) battled back in the contest from the free throw line, draining their final six free throw attempts in the last 1:13 on the clock as the Wolves completed the season sweep over the Tornados.
Micheala Watkins led the Brevard offense on the afternoon with 17 points and added three assists as the Tornados shot 36.5 percent (23-63) from the floor in the contest. Flippo added 15 points and six rebounds in the game, connecting on three three-pointers, while Lindsay Brendle added 12 points in her last game in front of the home crowd.
Lepaio led all players with 21 points and added 12 rebounds for the Wolves as Newberry held the 48-31 rebounding advantage in the contest. Lewis added 16 points and 12 boards in the game, while Zara Pearson had nine point and four assists to pace the Newberry offense.
Lewis led off the contest with a three-pointer, but both teams struggled to score from the floor as the teams combined for 10 points in the first six and a half minutes in the game. The Wolves snapped the scoring drought to build an eight point lead as Newberry went up 22-14 on a layup by Emily Perry with 7:02 on the clock.
Brevard battled back, tying up the contest on a 10-2 run as Lacey Singletary received the pass from Asheley Watkins and drove in for the layup to knot the game up at 24 apiece with 3:24 remaining. The run continued as Watkins hit a jumper and connected on a three-pointer, and Flippo drained a trey to give Brevard the 32-24 lead at the half.
The Tornados went up by double-digits early in the second half as Flippo drove in for a layup, giving Brevard the 36-26 lead two minutes into the period. Gleeson followed with a jumper to cut the lead back into single digits, but Brevard retained the lead for the first nine minutes of the period.
Lepaio snapped the BC lead in the second half, putting the Wolves up 45-44 on a layup, but Alyssa Cutshaw answered with a layup and three-pointer to put the Tornados back up by four with 9:48 on the clock.
The teams remained close for the remainder of the contest, battling the remainder of the contest as Brevard and Newberry tied the game three times in the final five minutes, with Lepaio knotting the game up at 59 apiece with 1:13 on the clock on a free throw. Lepaio drained the second free throw to put the Wolves up by one and Zara Pearson and Lewis both hit a pair of free throws in the final 13 seconds of the game to lead Newberry to the 64-59 victory.
Brevard closes out the 2011-2012 season on Saturday, February 25th in Wingate, N.C. as the Tornados take on Wingate University in a South Atlantic Conference matchup. Tipoff between the Tornados and the Bulldogs is set for 2 p.m.
