Tornados fall in season finale to Wingate, 58-50
Watkins scores 16 points in loss to the Bulldogs
Wingate, N.C. - Micheala Watkins capped off the Tornados 2011-2012 season with 16 points and added two steals, while Lindsay Brendle and Anna Schlobohm were also in double-digits for Brevard in their final collegiate game, but Wingate pulled away from Brevard late in Cuddy Arena to top the Tornados, 58-50.
Wingate (19-7, 13-5 SAC) clinched the top seed in the Food Lion South Atlantic Conference tournament, riding a 12 point halftime lead in completing the season sweep over Brevard (6-20, 1-17 SAC) behind double-digit performances by Kurie Washington and Janisha Williams.
Watkins led Brevard with 16 points as the Tornados shot 34.0 percent (17-50) from the floor in the contest. Brendle added 13 points and three rebounds, while Schlobohm narrowly missed on the double-double with 12 points and nine rebounds in her final collegiate action. Holli Flippo added seven rebounds, five offensive to complete her collegiate career on top of the BC career record books with 204 offensive rebounds.
Washington and Williams both had 14 points for the Bulldogs, with Washington doing the majority of her damage from the free throw line hitting 11-of-12 attempts as Wingate overcame a 25.0 percent (15-60) shooting performance from the floor in connecting on 23-of-29 free throw attempts (79.3 percent). Nikki Burton added eight points and eight rebounds, filling the stat sheet with four assists and three steals as the Bulldogs down the Tornados for the second time in the season.
Wingate jumped out of the gates in control of the contest, as Burton opened the game with a jumper as the Bulldogs built a 27-9 lead with 4:04 remaining in the first half. The Tornados closed out the period on a 12-6 run, cutting the Wingate lead down to 12 at 33-21 as Schlobohm connected on a three-pointer with 10 ticks remaining in the clock as the Bulldogs went into the break holding the 33-21 lead.
Brevard cut the lead to within single digits as the Tornados scored seven of the first nine points of the half as Watkins cut the lead down to within seven with 15:27 remaining on the clock, draining a free throw to put the score at 35-28. After Williams went in for the layup, Watkins answered with a jumper and a three-pointer to bring Brevard within four points at 37-33 with 12:13 left in the contest.
Wingate answered with a 10-0 run to increase the lead back to 14 on a pair of Washington free throws at the 8:02 mark. The Tornados continued to battle back in the contest, cutting the lead down to six on a pair of free throws by Watkins at 49-43 with 2:17 remaining, but Wingate connected on six consecutive free throws spanning the next 90 seconds to pull away in recording the 58-50 victory.
