Brevard falls to Tigers and Patriots on Sunday afternoon

Fletcher and Mallory hit home runs in BC losses

Florence, S.C. - Chelsi Mallory recorded her second home run of the season and Maddie Fletcher added her first collegiate home run against Francis Marion in the nightcap, but the Tornados fell to both West Alabama and Francis Marion on Sunday afternoon at the FMU Softball Field, 11-2 and 7-2.

Brevard falls to 7-9 on the season with the losses to the Tigers and the Patriots.

Game One: West Alabama 11, Brevard 2

Taylor Miller drove in four runs and Morgan Morrison and Rebecca Schick also drove in multiple base runners as West Alabama topped Brevard on the neutral field in recording the 11-2 victory.

The Tigers scored seven runs in the first two innings to take control of the contest early, with Morrison providing most of the damage with a bases-clearing double to left field, scoring Tamara Vickers, Schick and Shoup to put West Alabama up 7-0 after two innings.

The Tigers added another run in the top of the fourth as Miller drove in Scarlett Wright with a two-out single up the middle. Brevard answered in the bottom half off the inning as Mallory led off the frame for the Tornados with her second home run of the 2012 season, this one a solo shot over the left field fence to put Brevard on the scoreboard.

Miller drove in three more runs in the top of the sixth for the Tigers, clearing the bases with a double down the left field line, and Brevard plated a run in their final at-bat as Brittany Tucker brought in Brittany Fowler with a single to left field. However, the Tigers retired the final BC batter with the bases loaded, ending the inning in recording the win.

Game Two: Francis Marion 7, Brevard 2

Fletcher drove out her first collegiate home run as the senior third baseman worked a full count before driving a two-out shot over the left field fence to give Brevard the early lead, but the Patriots battled back, scoring three runs in both the third and the fifth innings in defeating the Tornados 7-2.

Francis Marion scored first in the contest, crossing the plate in the bottom of the first inning as Tristan Faile brought home Destinea Schneider with a one-out single, giving the Patriots the early lead.

Kayla Clemens led the Tornados in the top of the second driving a double down the left field line to spark the Brevard offense in the frame. A passed ball advanced her to third, but the Patriots retired the next two batters. Fletcher followed, working a full count off Kayla Ellingesen before driving a pitch over the left field fence to put the Tornados up 2-1.

Francis Marion scored six unanswered runs to close out the game, taking the lead on Jazz Holliday’s two RBI double in the bottom of the third and Krissy Longstreet added a run scoring triple in the bottom of the fifth inning to pull away as the Patriots topped the Tornados in the final game of the weekend.

Brevard remains on the road as they travel to Laurinburg, N.C. to take on St. Andrews on Monday, March 5th. First pitch between the Tornados and the Knights is set for 2 p.m.
