Queen and Watkins earn February Sports Spot Student Athlete of the Month honors
Brevard, N.C. - Micheala Watkins of the Women’s Basketball team and Cody Queen of the Baseball team have been named the Sports Spot Student-Athletes of the Month for the month of February, as recognized on WSQL 1240 AM on Wednesday afternoon. The award is presented by Sports Spot, in conjunction with the Brevard College Athletic Department.
Watkins was voted the Female Student-Athlete of the Month by the BC Head Coaching staff over fellow nominees Kayla Clemens of the Softball team and Claire Dillman of the Tennis team.
Watkins wins the award for the second time this year, after capturing Athlete of the Month honors for November. The junior guard led the South Atlantic Conference for the second consecutive year, leading the SAC in steals with 95. In the month of February, she averaged 12.6 points per game, 2.3 assists and 2.6 steals per game, while hitting 45.8 percent of her field goal attempts on the month.
Queen was voted the Men’s Student-Athlete of the Month by the BC Head Coaching Staff over Gaither Hendrix of the Men’s Basketball team and George Finch of the Tennis team.
Queen is a first time winner of the award and continued the opening month of his BC career with another first in becoming Brevard’s first South Atlantic Conference Baseball Player of the Week after leading the Tornados to their first conference sweep over Lenoir-Rhyne. Queen led Brevard in batting average (.417), runs scored (18), home runs (4), total bases (33), slugging percentage and on-base percentage in the month in leading Brevard to their best month since the program joined the NCAA back in 2008.
These two athletes will be presented with action shots recognizing their award, which will be displayed in the lobby of Boshamer Gymnasium for the entire school year. A total of eight female and male Sports Spot Athletes of the Month will be selected in the 2010-2011 academic year. The award is selected from qualified candidates each month by the athletic department staff.
