Fielding miscues drop Tornados against Falcons
Brevard falls in season series to Pfeiffer, 8-6
Brevard, N.C. - Zach Merriken hit his fifth home run of the season, driving in four runs for Brevard in the contest, but the visiting Falcons took advantage of four Tornados errors in scoring five unearned runs as Pfeiffer topped Brevard at Gil Coan Field on Wednesday afternoon, 8-6.
Tyler Summers (2-0) picked up the win for Pfeiffer (14-10), while Craig Bolton recorded his sixth save on the season, pitching a scoreless frame in the bottom of the ninth to close out the win. Dustin Haithcox (0-1) recorded the loss, pitching two innings and allowing three runs (none earned) in the loss.
Brevard opened the game scoring runs in the first two innings as Merriken recorded the first RBI of the contest, driving in Eric Renegar in the first frame with a groundout, while Champ Stuart singled in Kameron Armacost in the second to put the Tornados up 2-0 against Falcons starter Keith Little.
Pfeiffer breached the scoreboard in the top of the third inning as Aarin Sharpe led off the inning with a double down the left field line off BC starter Kevin Hamilton. Kevin Price brought in Sharpe with a groundout, while Justin Harris knotted up the score, breaking up a double play attempt and allowing Jacob Yates to score to even the game at 2 apiece.
The Tornados and the Falcons kept pace with each other as Brevard pushed across a run in the bottom of the third with Chad Funkhouser scoring as the Pfeiffer catcher’s throwdown to second was late to catch a stealing Cody Queen. The Falcons again evened the score in the fifth as Jon Gray drove a ball over the left centerfield fence, over the 375’ sign to tie the score at three.
Brevard doubled the score in the bottom of the fifth inning, putting a crooked frame up on the board as Merriken blasted a 1-2 curveball over the bullpen down the left field line, scoring Stuart and Robinson to give the Tornados the 6-3 lead.
The Falcons answered with a pair of unearned runs in the sixth as Matt Wade scored on a failed pick off attempt and Yates came across the plate on a throwing error by the BC shortstop to cut the lead to 6-5.
Pfeiffer took control of the game in the top of the ninth, again relying on a Brevard fielding miscue to put the Falcons on top. Gray advanced to second with two outs in the frame before Dalton Lindley singled to right field. The hit went through the legs of the BC right fielder, allowing Gray to score, while Lindley ended up at third on the play. Cole McGraw and Matt Wade followed with RBI singles to push Pfeiffer ahead 8-6 heading into the bottom of the inning.
Robinson put a runner on base for Brevard in the bottom half of the inning against Bolton, but the Tornados were unable to keep the rally alive as the Tornados fell at Gil Coan Field for only the second time this season.
Brevard remains at home as they continue South Atlantic Conference play on Friday, March 16th against #15 Catawba College. First pitch at Gil Coan Field between the Tornados and the Indians is set for 3 p.m.
