Brevard takes two from SAC opponent LMU, 4-0 and 6-4
Brevard, N.C. - Kayla Clemens recorded wins in both games of the doubleheader against Lincoln Memorial and connected on the go-ahead three-run home run in the second game as Brevard swept the visiting Railsplitters on Saturday afternoon at the BC Softball Field, 4-0 and 6-4.
Brevard improves to 12-14, 3-3 in South Atlantic Conference play, while Lincoln Memorial falls to 10-19, 2-4 in conference action.
Game One: Brevard 4, Lincoln Memorial 0
Brevard erupted for three runs in the first inning and Clemens recorded her second shutout of the season as the Tornados topped the Railsplitters in the first game of the day, 4-0.
The Tornados loaded the bases to open the bottom of the first as Brittany Fowler reached on a walk and Brittany Tucker and Chelsi Mallory connected on back-to-back singles off LMU starter Meghan LaFevor. Clemens dropped a bunt down, scoring Fowler from third for the first BC run in the contest. Emily Boykin followed with a run scoring fielder’s choice and Maddie Fletcher drove in the final BC run in the frame with a sacrifice fly to left field to give Clemens a 3-0 advantage after one.
Brevard added an insurance run in the bottom of the fifth inning as Boykin led off the inning with a single. Brittany Jones advanced her to third with a base hit down the right field line and Meredith Davenport brought her in with a single over the shortstop to give the Tornados the 4-0 lead.
Clemens closed out the game allowing one LMU hitter to reach base over the final two innings to record the five-hit shutout over the Railsplitters.
Game Two: Brevard 6, Lincoln Memorial 4
Clemens blasted a two-out three-run home run in the bottom of the fourth inning to put the Tornados ahead 5-3 and Brevard held on to complete the SAC sweep over the visiting Railsplitters on Saturday afternoon.
Brevard opened up the scoring in the game, pushing two runs across in the bottom of the first inning as Boykin singled in Tucker with one out and Jones drew a bases loaded walk, scoring Clemens to put the Tornados up 2-0 in the early going.
Lincoln Memorial took the lead in the third inning as Taylor McGinnis pushed the first Railsplitters run across the plate on the afternoon, driving a home run over the centerfield fence with one out to cut the Brevard lead in half. Amanda Snow and Bridget Eicher followed with back-to-back doubles to even the score, before Sarah Walz put the Railsplitters ahead with base hit up the middle, scoring Eicher to give the Railsplitters the 3-2 lead.
The Tornados bounced back in the fourth inning as Fowler and Tucker reached on a single and a walk to put Brevard in position to tie the game up. Clemens however had other plans as the sophomore from Sebring, Fla. erased the Tornados deficit and put Brevard ahead with her fourth home run of the season, clearing the fence in left centerfield to put BC up 5-3.
The Railsplitters and the Tornados traded runs as Eicher scored on a Brevard throwing error in the top of the fifth inning, while Brevard answered in the sixth frame with Fowler scoring on a groundout to push across the final run of the game.
Walz singled for LMU in the top of the seventh for one final comeback attempt, but Clemens retired the final two batters of the game to record her eighth win of the season.
Brevard remains at home as the Tornados welcome Johnson C. Smith University to the BC Softball Field for a doubleheader tomorrow afternoon. First pitch between the Tornados and the Golden Bulls is set for 2 p.m.
