Bats come alive as Tornados sweep Golden Bulls, 7-1 and 10-1

Clemens, Mallory pace BC offensive efforts in season sweep

Brevard, N.C. - Chelsi Mallory scored five runs and Kayla Clemens had five hits as Brevard swept visiting Johnson C. Smith on Sunday afternoon at the BC Softball Field, 7-1 and 10-1.

Clemens (9-7) and Alyssa Miller (5-7) picked up the wins for Brevard (14-14) as the Tornados completed the season sweep over the Golden Bulls. Tenesha Simmons (4-4) and Stacy Peralta (3-9) suffered the losses for Johnson C. Smith (8-19).

Brittany Fowler led off the game with a double and the Tornados struck for three runs in both the first and second innings as Brevard took the first game from the Golden Bulls.

The Tornados struck first in the bottom of the first inning as Fowler doubled off the fence in left field to lead off the game, advancing to third on Brittany Tucker’s sacrifice bunt. Mallory brought Fowler home with a base hit to left, and Clemens and Boykin followed with a single and walk to load the bases against Simmons. Maddie Fletcher brought in two runs with a single in the left centerfield gap to give the tornados the 3-0 lead after one.

Following a scoreless top of the second, Brevard struck again in the bottom half of the inning as Clemens drove in Ally Davenport and Tucker with a bases loaded single down the right field line. Emily Boykin followed with a sacrifice fly scoring Mallory to give Brevard the 6-0 advantage.

Brevard added another run in the bottom of the fourth, pushing the Tornados within one run of the mercy rule as Boykin singled in Mallory with one out in the frame, but Simmons retired the side to keep Brevard at bay.

Clemens kept the Golden Bulls bats silent until the seventh inning, allowing three hits until Alexandra Buckley drove a 3-2 pitch over the fence down the left field line to put JCSU on the scoreboard. Clemens retired the final Golden Bull hitter to end the contest in favor of the hosts.

The Tornados took advantage of four Golden Bull errors to score six unearned runs, with Clemens going a perfect 3-for-3 from the plate with two RBIs and two runs scored while Miller dealt a three-hitter on the mound as Brevard completed the sweep over Johnson C. Smith.

After a 1-2-3 top of the first, the Tornados placed two across the plate in the bottom half of the inning as three of the first four BC hitters drilled singled as Clemens scored Fowler with base hit to centerfield for the first run in the contest. Fletcher also recorded an RBI in the frame, scoring Tucker on a fielder’s choice to give BC the 2-0 lead.

The Tornados put up another crooked frame in the third inning as Brevard loaded the bases with two outs in the inning as Clemens singled, Brittany Jones drew a walk and Meredith Davenport hit a base hit to right center. Ally Davenport hit a grounder in the infield, but the JCSU fielder threw the ball down the right field line, allowing all three runners to score on the play with Davenport ending up on third as Brevard went up 5-0.

Brevard continued to add to the lead, taking advantage of two errors in the fourth inning as Brevard sent 10 batters to the plate in the inning. Clemens and Fletcher had RBI base hits in the inning, while Heather Morris drove in Fletcher with a single down the left field line as the Tornados built a 10-0 advantage, needing to finish the fifth inning to complete the game.

Johnson C. Smith pushed across a run in the top of the fifth, ending Miller’s bid for a shutout as the Golden Bulls loaded the bases with one out in the inning. Samantha Smith connected on an RBI single up the middle, scoring Jasmin Harris from third, but Miller was able to hold the Golden Bulls short of keeping the game alive, retiring the final two batters to complete the win.

Brevard returns to the road on Wednesday, March 21st, as the Tornados return to South Atlantic Conference play as they head to Salisbury, N.C. to take on Catawba College. First pitch in the doubleheader between the Tornados and the Catawba Indians is set for 2 p.m.
