Tornados knock out 18 hits in win over Flying Fleet
Brevard, N.C. - Brevard College snapped a five game losing streak at Gil Coan Field led by four hits by Chad Funkhouser and a standout pitching performance by Kevin Hamilton as the Tornados earned the season split against Erskine College on Monday afternoon with the 12-3 victory.
Hamilton (1-1) picks up his first win of the season as Brevard improves to 15-15 overall, while Kevin Cantrell (1-3) suffered the loss for Erskine (15-12).
Funkhouser went 4-for-5 from the plate with three RBIs and three runs scored, while Tarron Robinson, Christian Christopoulos and Bennett Hixson all drove in two runs apiece as Brevard topped Erskine, earning a measure of revenge after their season opening 11-8 defeat at the hands of the Flying Fleet.
The Tornados opened the scoring in the bottom of the second frame as Christopoulos led off the inning with a single. Randy O’Dell followed with a base hit, advancing him to third base, where he crossed the plate on Hixson’s sacrifice fly to give Brevard the early lead. Funkhouser continued the scoring with a two-out single up the middle, scoring O’Dell to put Brevard up 2-0 after two.
An infield single by Kameron Armacost put the Tornados offense on the go in the fourth inning as the senior centerfielder from Littlestown, Pa. stole second and third base, before scoring on Merriken’s base hit in the left centerfield gap. The Tornados loaded the bases on walks, before Kramer Clark drew a bases-loaded full-count walk, scoring Funkhouser to double the BC lead.
Erskine battled back in the top of the fifth, cutting the Brevard lead in half as Corn and Will Huff opened the inning reaching base on a walk and a single. A sacrifice bunt advanced both runners into scoring position, where Corn eventually scored on a wild pitch. Huff came around to score after Cameron Yost was caught in a rundown attempting to steal to put the score at 4-2 midway through the game.
The Tornados came back in the bottom of the sixth, extending the lead as Brevard sent 10 batters to the plate, scoring five runs in the frame to push the lead to 9-2. Funkhouser and Robinson had run scoring doubles in the inning, while Hixson and Christopoulos also added runs to pad the Tornados lead.
John Slade and Christopoulos added RBIs for Brevard in the seventh inning, while Funkhouser drove in Whit Bowen in the eighth for the final BC runs in the game.
Erskine pushed across their final run in the contest in the top of the ninth as Corn came around to score on a BC error, but Zach Huneycutt closed out the BC win on the mound to end the BC streak.
Brevard remains in non-conference play as the Tornados return to the road on Wednesday, March 21st as Brevard makes the trip to Bristol, Tenn. to take on King College. First pitch between Brevard and King is set for 2 p.m.
