Young Harris takes one from Tornados during battle with the elements

Lightning delays and night fall cancels second game of doubleheader

Young Harris, Ga. - Brittany Fowler posted two hits and Brittany Tucker and Maddie Fletcher each a double in the contest, but Brevard battled the Mountain Lions and the weather on Tuesday afternoon in falling to Young Harris, 3-0.

Kayla Clemens (11-12) suffered the loss in the contest, throwing a complete game for Brevard (18-19), while Victoria Sink (8-4) picked up the win for the host Mountain Lions (19-16) at E.D. Rivers Field.

Game One: Young Harris 3, Brevard 0

Young Harris struck in the bottom of the first against Clemens as Emily Wilson launched an 0-1 pitch over the centerfield fence with one out in the frame to give the Mountain Lions the early lead.

Brevard threatened in the top of the third as Brittany Jones and Fowler reached on back-to-back one-out singles, but YHC escaped the inning with a double play to end the frame and keep the score intact.

Young Harris added their second run in the bottom of the fourth inning as Kayla Jones led off the inning with a home run over the left centerfield fence. The Mountain Lions threatened to blow the game open in the frame, putting runners on first and second in the inning with two outs, but Clemens retired the side to keep the 2-0 score intact midway through the game.

Brevard placed runners in scoring position in both the fifth and the sixth inning as Fletcher reached on a one-out double up the middle, while Tucker led off the sixth inning with a double to straightaway centerfield, however the Tornados were unable to threaten the Mountain Lion lead in the contest.

Young Harris added the final run in the bottom of the fifth as Wilson brought in Sydnee Weaver with a sacrifice fly to centerfield.

Game Two: Brevard 3, Young Harris 0 (Suspended in 2nd inning)

Brevard opened the second game with three runs in the top of the first, but a lightning delay and the imminent darkness of night ended the afternoon between the Tornados and the Mountain Lions, with the second game and statistics not counting toward either team’s schedule.

Brevard remains on the road, but returns to South Atlantic Conference play as the Tornados travel to Hickory, N.C. to take on Lenoir-Rhyne University. First pitch in the doubleheader between the Tornados and the Bears at the LRU Softball Field is set for 1 p.m.
