Men's Soccer Edged in Season Opener

Brevard, N.C.- The Brevard College men’s soccer team dropped a close 3-2 match in their 2012 season opener against Erskine College in Due West, South Carolina on Thursday.

Erskine sophomore Andrew Settlemire scored the game’s first goal, finding the corner of the net from the left side at the 16:52 mark.

It didn’t take long for Brevard to answer Settlemire’s goal as the Tornados tied the game at 1-1 at 19:28, courtesy of a Landon Reid header. Nicolas Daza chipped a penalty kick into the box, which Reid headed over the leap of Erskine goalie Roberto De La Vina for the score.

The Flying Fleet would regain the lead when De La Vina’s goal kick landed just outside the Brevard penalty box, which Settlemire was able to settle and punch into the net at 36: 08. Erskine would take the 2-1 lead into the half.

The two teams played evenly to begin the second half before the Flying Fleet took a 3-1 lead at the 69:01 mark when Trevor Moreland’s cross into the middle was headed in by Jay Lang.

The Tornados, though, were not finished. Junior Montano brought Brevard within one as he scored an unassisted goal at 86:07 to make it 3-2. Brevard’s Paulo Silva almost tied the game at 88:13 with a shot on goal, but a save by De La Vina sealed the victory for Erskine.
