BC Men Upset Tusculum in OT ThrillerSeptember 11, 2012
Greenville, Tenn. – The BC men’s soccer team edged Tusculum 1-0 on a Junior Montano golden goal in the 99th minute at Pioneer Field on Tuesday.
Montano headed a Jami Uuttu free kick past Pioneer goalie Andy Goellner with 5.3 seconds remaining in the first overtime period for the victory. The goal was Montano’s third of the season, and lifted the BC men to a 1-0 South Atlantic Conference record.
Tusculum was selected in the preseason coaches’ poll as the favorite to win the 2012 South Atlantic league title after finishing second in the SAC standings in 2011 at 6-1-2.
Pauli Jussila anchored the Tornados between the posts, keeping the Pioneers off the board for 99:55 while recording five saves and his first shutout of the season.
Montano put a shot on goal in the final minute of regulation, which represented Goellner’s only save of the match. Landon Reid also had a scoring opportunity for the Tornados when he had Goellner in a one-on-one opportunity in the 68th minute, but his shot from 20 yards out missed wide.
The Tornados return to action on the road against Bluefield College in nonconference competition on Saturday at 5 p.m.
