Bulldogs Remain Undefeated in SAC Play; Defeat the Tornados in Straight Sets

Box Score

Brevard, N.C. – The Brevard College volleyball team had a tough task on Saturday night, as the Tornados took on South Atlantic Conference leader Wingate in conference play, only one night after picking up a five set match win on the road last night at Mars Hill.

The Tornados stayed in ever set of the match but just couldn’t come away with a win, falling 25-22, 25-17 and 25-19.  The loss drops the Tornados to 10-12 overall and 2-9 in the conference, while Wingate, who is ranked No. 1 in the region, moves to 20-1 overall and 9-0 in the SAC with the win.

In the first set, the Tornados jumped out to an early 10-7 lead on a kill by BC junior outside hitter Chelsey Trojan.  However, the Bulldogs battled back to tie the score up at 11-11 on Maggie Malone service ace, forcing the Tornados to call a timeout to stop the run.

Out of the timeout the Tornados were able to knot the score up on four different occasions (12-12, 13-13, 15-15 and 17-17) before Wingate pulled away late in the set, pushing the lead to as high as four points before winning the set 25-22 on a kill by Heather Myklebust.

In the second set, the Bulldogs ran ahead of the Tornados big, going on a 6-0 run to open up the set and take an early lead.  A kill by BC freshman setter Kari Sims, stopped the run, put the Tornados on the board and started the Tornados offense that stormed back to cute the Wingate lead to two at 11-9 on a kill by Trojan.

Yet the Bulldogs refused to relinquish the lead, pulling away after a BC timeout, outscoring the Tornados 13-8 for the remainder of the set to pick up the 25-17 win and take a 2-0 advantage in the match.

Set three saw the Tornados take an early 1-0 lead, only to have Wingate score the next four points and hold on to the lead for the remainder of the match.  The Bulldogs pushed their lead to as high as eight in the set at 18-10, but couldn’t pull away from the Tornados, winning the set 25-19 and the match 3-0.

The Tornados were led by Trojan, who had eight kills and 10 digs for the match, while freshman outside hitter Chelsea Larsen posted seven kills on the night.  Junior middle hitter Brooke Seaman had five kills and five block assists, while libero Rebecca Schoonover had a match-high 13 digs.

The freshmen duo of Sims, who got the first start of her career on Saturday night, and Lindsey Rogers combined to dish out 25 sets assists for the match, as the two filled in admirably in the absence of injured senior setter and captain Jami Perry.

Wingate was led by Lauren Billo and Stormi Gale, as both posted nine kills for the match.  Outside hitter Rebecca Bloemer added seven kills of her own, while setter Liz Willis had a match-high 32 assists over the three sets.

The Tornados will step out of SAC play in their next match, as Coach Skeffington’s squad will travel to Tigerville, S.C. on Tuesday, October 21, to face off with the Lady Crusaders of North Greenville University.  That match is slated for a 7 p.m. start time.  Wingate will play again on Tuesday night as well, as the Bulldogs will play at Catawba at 7 p.m.
