Tornados Fall to UNC Asheville in Exhibition

Asheville, N.C.- The Brevard College men’s basketball team fell 91-60 to the UNC Asheville Bulldogs in an exhibition game at Kimmel Arena on Monday night.

Sophomore Gerel Simmons paced the Tornados offensively, scoring 18 points while shooting 7-of-12 from the floor and 3-of-4 from beyond the arc. Freshman Miles Leathers also scored in double figures in his first appearance as a Tornado, and was perfect from the free throw line in five attempts.

“We had some guys step up and play really well tonight, but we certainly have a lot of things to work on,” said head coach Lee Burgess. “Our progress will depend upon how quickly we can make adjustments.”

Freshman Alex Moe hit a three-pointer on BC’s first possession of the game to give the Tornados a quick 3-0 lead. The Bulldogs shot well from three-point range and worked the ball inside to take a 51-31 lead into the half, but BC played the Bulldogs much tighter after the break.

“I was encouraged that our guys played hard for 40 minutes,” Burgess added.

The Bulldogs capitalized on a noticeable height advantage, out-rebounding the Tornados 57-27 on the night. Asheville also outscored BC 51-31 in the paint. However, it should be noted that Asheville’s roster boasts four players who are 6-8 or taller.

The Tornados open their 2012-2013 campaign on Friday evening at 5:30 p.m. against Columbus State as part of a tournament hosted by Georgia Southwestern University. BC will make a quick turnaround as they square off with Georgia Southwestern on Saturday at 2 p.m.
