Tornados Edged in OTNovember 28, 2012
Jefferson City, Tenn.- The Brevard College Tornados lost a 62-59 overtime heartbreaker to the Carson-Newman Eagles in Holt Fieldhouse on Wednesday night.
Freshman Katie Williams knocked down a pair of free throws with four seconds remaining in overtime to cut the deficit to three points, but the Eagles successfully inbounded the ball and drained the remaining seconds to end the game.
Carson-Newman and Brevard exchanged baskets to begin the overtime period before the Eagles went on an 8-3 run.
An Asheley Watkins three-pointer and two free throws from Williams brought the Tornados within three points at 60-57. Carson-Newman’s Tatum Burstrom drew a foul on the ensuing possession and hit both free throws to push the Eagles lead to 62-57.
Carson-Newman’s Jai Jai McLaughlin hit a pair of foul shots with 59 seconds left in the second half to knot the score at 50-50.
An Eagles turnover gave BC the ball with 4.2 seconds remaining in regulation, but a Micheala Watkins half-court heave fell short of the rim to send the game into overtime.
Freshman Tuccoa Brackett led the Tornados offense with 20 points while pulling down seven rebounds. Williams and senior Tempestt Mack also posted double-digit point totals, dropping 10 and 11, respectively.
Brevard opened the second half on an 11-1 run to take a 29-26 advantage in a game that saw the eight lead changes.
The Eagles capitalized on a BC scoring drought late in the first half by scoring nine unanswered points to take a 25-18 lead into the break.
The Tornados open their South Atlantic Conference home schedule on Saturday as they host the Mars Hill College Lions at 4 p.m. in Boshamer Gymnasium.
