Perkins Powers Catawba Past Tornados
Brevard, N.C.- Catawba's Reggie Perkins scored a career-high 27 points to help the Indians to a 71-63 win over the Brevard College Tornados in Boshamer Gymnasium on Wednesday night.
The Tornados had closed the gap to a point with a 7-2 run with just over six minutes remaining in the game, capped by a Gerel Simmons layup with 6:07 remaining in the second half.
Perkins, however, answered with a trey to spark an 8-0 run for the Indians to keep the Tornados rally at bay. Perkins finished 9-for-10 from the floor, including 7-of-8 from three-point range after hitting his first seven shots to start the game.
The Indians took advantage of an 8:33 Tornado scoring drought in the first half, scoring 16 unanswered points to take a 26-10 lead on a Perkins jumper with 7:51 left before the half.
Alex Moe hit a pair of free throws at 5:19 to end the drought, and BC was able to work their halftime deficit down to 10 thanks to an 11-5 run to end the first half.
Freshman Manzey Miller led the BC scoring effort with 17 points while distributing five assists. Moe, Miles Leathers and Simmons all finished in double figures with 13, 12 and 11, respectively. Simmons grabbed a team-high seven rebounds.
The Tornados are on the road on Saturday as they visit Stanford Arena for a contest with the Mars Hill College Lions. The Tornados earned their lone conference win against the Lions in a 91-90 thriller in Boshamer Gymnasium on December 1st. Simmons hit the game-winning three as time expired in regulation to lift BC.
